Cycling is one of the main ways people get around in flat countries like the Netherlands, France and Germany as the land is level and cycleways are established, but it's never been as popular in Spain where there are more hills and not as many cycling routes provided. However, more and more residents, and tourists, have been turning to their bikes as pedal power becomes increasingly fashionable for exercise and for the environment, and as the city's mild and sunny climate is perfect for outdoor activities, and there is the added attraction of getting around without spending money on petrol, its appeal is obvious.

Whereas just a few years ago it was uncommon to see people cycling in Barcelona, urban cycling is now in demand and these days bikes are quite a regular sight around the city centre. And for the residents it couldn't have come any sooner as reports claim it's one of the most polluted cities in Europe - the more people hop on their bikes the less cars are on the road leading to a reduction in pollution.

The city council are also doing their bit towards encouraging people to find more environmentally-friendly methods of travel, they have introduced a bike-sharing initiative which has been eagerly received. Providing over 6,000 free public bikes throughout the city the ‘bicing scheme' enables free bikes to be picked up and dropped off again later at various locations. Residents pay around €6 for the year and receive a card which is then taken to any of the bike stations around the city, swipe it and tap in a PIN and the bike is unlocked. Once the destination is reached it's locked back into the nearest station - a very simple and effective system.

This has led to the council increasing the number of cycle lanes in all areas of the city making it a safe and green way to travel. Those out for a scenic ride can also choose to take a leisurely trip along the seafront which offers wide boulevards and fresh sea air, but be careful if you have brought your own bike along for the trip as theft is common, make sure you have a strong lock and secure it when necessary, if you hire from a shop they should provide you with sufficient locks.

There are various companies that organise bike tours too, the price usually involves the bike and helmut with an English-speaking tour guide to show you the sights. Most tours are likely to include Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and the Old City, Cuitadella Park, Barcelona Cathedral, the Olympic Port and the Old Harbour and often no booking is required, you just turn up at the departure point at the scheduled time. During the summer months they often organise night tours too. Going around the city by bike is like no other tour as the freedom it gives you means you really get to experience the metropolis and can soak up its history, culture, sights and energy through the close proximity to the city's neighbourhoods.

For your holiday to be relaxing and fun you should plan it carefully particularly when it comes to where you are going to stay.Travellers priorities are the same whatever their budget, they want to be near to the city's sights and attractions and require a place that is clean, central, and friendly.

When looking to rent an apartment or searching for a hotel room always try and check it out online first for its location, you want to know if you can walk to local places of interest and nearby restaurants and bars, what amenities are included in the price and does it include breakfast? Look on travel forums and ask questions from other travellers as you can trust their answers to be honest and this will help you decide on the best option for you.

Rental apartments are the first choice for all kinds of holiday-makers as they're inexpensive, whether your stay only lasts the weekend or it's an extended break. Accommodation in the city centre means you can walk, or bike, to many of the sights thus saving money on transport. Look up Barcelona online and see what it has to offer.
