If you are planning a trip to San Francisco for your family or even for yourself, you will probably end up at Fisherman's Wharf sometime during your stay. In this area of the city you will notice how much there is to do and see. The views of San Francisco Bay are gorgeous, the Golden Gate Bridge is in sight, and there are parks, tours, and limitless fun.
Here are a few ideas for things to do.
The famous Ghiradelli Square has everything. Shopping, dining, and you can't forget the best part. Their delicious San Francisco chocolate that made the name Ghiradelli famous.
The Boudin Bakery gives a taste, literally, of the sour dough bread that was made popular in San Francisco, California. While here you can take a tour of their bakery and have a peek into the museum and learn a little more about the origins of sour dough bread.
An attraction that is often skipped and overlooked is Musee Mecanique. This is a vast collection of classic arcade games, which boasts over 300 different pieces. This game fanatics paradise is found on Pier 45. The best part is that the museum is free and visitors are allowed to play some of the games. While entrance into the museum is free, the arcade games are not and it isn't only a nickle for a play but a quarter.
An attraction that which is well established is the famous Wax Museum where you can see some of your favorite celebrities and actors.
If creepy and strange things fancy your interest, then Ripley's Believe It or Not museum is a stop you need to take.
If you want a taste of the how San Francisco was in the past, The Cannery is a great place to start. It was the largest cannery in the world during its time. The Cannery in San Francisco is now home to shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Pier 39 may be worth taking the time to visit. You will either love the pier or hate it. It is the perfect tourism spot filled with high priced souvenirs and restaurants. There is a lot to do. There are stunning, picture perfect sights, seafood, live entertainment, and the ever popular sea lions that beach themselves very close to Pier 39. The sound of the sea lions can be heard from the pier as many have made this area their home. It is definitely a different atmosphere when you are so close to nature and can see what it really is like in the San Francisco city limits.
One last bit of advice for your San Francisco tour. Pier 39 is accessible by vehicle but isn't worth the hassle of trying to find parking and dealing with traffic that can be avoided by taking San Francisco city transportation. Because the Wharf area is a highly trafficked area of tourists, there are always people walking and not paying attention to traffic around them. Again, parking is horrendous and will cost you an arm and a leg.
The best option is to take San Francisco's transit as it is the most reliable, fastest way to get around the city. San Francisco transit is quite a deal at only $1.50 or so for a ticket to get around the entire city.
