Being surrounded by the London Borough of Havering to the west and north, the A13 road to the south and the M25 motorway to the east, Aveley is in the near proximity of South Ockendon, Wennington, West Thurrock and Purfleet. Aveley is actually a suburban development that was mentioned in The Domesday Book as Alvileis, Alvilea or Alvithelea, and the meaning of the name is "Aelfgyth's wood clearing". The 2001 census that took place with the help of the Thurrock Council, Aveley had a population of over eight thousand people, together with Uplands.
