Pump packing is very important because it is vital to the workings of the machine. There are many different kinds of packing available, depending on what kind of pump it is. It is extremely important to make sure that the pump packing is installed correctly, or else the pump may fail.

One of the most difficult parts of installing new pump packing is simply making sure that all of the old packing is completely removed. If any of the old packing is left inside, there will likely be problems with the new installation, so it is best to clean it completely out first. As soon as the old pump packing is out, take the time to visually inspect the inside of the pump. You hardly ever get the chance to look inside and examine all the moving parts, so this is the perfect time to do it.

Start by looking at the surface of the shaft and make sure that it is smooth and undamaged. This is the surface that will need to be resealed, so it must be undamaged so that you can seal it up properly. Watch out for pitting on the shaft, and keep in mind that the shaft should be resurfaced if you see a lot of wear and tear.

Another important thing to look at when you are changing the pump packing is the bore diameter surface. Scratches can create places for leaks to form in even the most careful job of pump packing, so make sure that the bore diameter surface is smooth. Also check the gasket to make sure that it provides a smooth surface.

After the old pump packing is out and you have examined the interior of the pump, then it is important that you measure the dimensions of the pump, like the shaft diameter, box depth, and bore diameter. Next be sure to cut the new pump packing into rings, making sure that the ends meet smoothly without creating a gap.

While you insert each ring of the pump packing, make sure that it sits flat in the bottom of the stuffing box. As each ring is pressed inside of the pump, make sure that the seams are not all together on the same side. Alternate the seams by right angles with each new ring of pump packing. This will ensure a very tight fit that does not leak and offers even compression for loads.
