It has happened to every one of us - transferring contacts, calendar etc between an old cellphone and a new cellphone. Although recent models of all phone brands usually have some sort of synchronization software bundled with them, it can be sometimes a really complicated process. Usually you have to:

  • Install software from first phone manufacturer on your PC/Mac.

  • "Download" data from old phone to your Mac/PC using synchronization software

  • On your PC/Mac install software from second manufacturer

  • Transfer data between two synchronization softwares (applicable if you changed brand of phone). This step can be particularly tricky...

  • "Upload" data to your new cell phone

This process is complicated because you need all cables, old cell phone must be functioning completely etc.. When one of these conditions could not be met, you have a problem - usually you have to transfer contact by typing them on paper, or rely on copying them via SIM card, which can have some negative effects (eg. shortening names).

Alternative solution could be to use an online cloud service phonecopy.com. It supports almost all thinkable cell phone types, is quite straight-forward to use and last but not least - it's free. Not only will this service transfer your contacts, but if you synchronize with it from time to time, it can be used as a "backup platform" - if you lose your cellphone, or if the battery get wasted you can have access to your contacts provided you have access to the internet. You can "manage" your contacts from their web page - that is much more comfortable than doing from a small cell phone.

So how does contact / calendar / messages / etc data transfer look like with this service? First, an online account needs to be created. Then upload data from old cell phone, and synchronize your new mobile phone. The only tricky part here is to tell your cell phones how to reach phonecopy's cloud servers. This is usually done in phone settings, under synchronization options. Detailed description of this process is provided on project site for every single cell phone. iPhone and Android phones are even simpler, because there are free applications for them that do most of the user's work automatically. They can be found on respective brand application store.

So, if everything goes right, you will have two different cellphones with exactly same data on them. Next time you get a new phone, it will be even simpler to transfer all your precious data to it.
