How To Kill Ants Effectively

Ants are a difficult pest to get rid of. Back at the ant colony, they are producing new ants almost faster than you are able to kill them. Figure out what kind of ants you have first, and then you will know better what type of product you need. Many insecticides and products will only kill the ants it comes in direct contact with. This is not doing much to get rid of the true source of the problem. The key to killing ants is to eliminate the nest. Most often you have absolutely no idea where the ants are nesting. This is the reason for using a product that does not kill the ants on contact, but will be picked up and carried back to the colony. Ants are social creatures, so they will spread the poison to the others and eventually kill the queen and entire colony.
One of the best ways to attack the entire colony of ants is to use ant baits. It is commonly known that ants are out looking for food. Well, ant baits are an attractive food source to them. There are different ant baits that come as a granule or as a liquid gel. You can find sugar-based or protein based ant baits. They draw-in the ants. It is more effective to use sugar based bait along with a protein based one. This is because the ant diet can change from day to day.
Having both sugar and protein out will guarantee that, no matter their daily diet needs, you have what they ate looking for. The ants will eat some and take some back to the colony. Not to mention, they will inform the other ants of the food source too. Baits do not function by killing ants right away. The effect will not take place until after there has been time enough to spread the bait in the colony. This serves as the only way to truly eliminate your ant problem, killing them at the source.
Without killing the colony, you could possibly be battling the same ants for months. Once your ants are gone, then it would be wise to spray an insecticide that kills on contact. You do not want to spray something of that nature while you have an ant bait out, for you would end up killing the ants before they got a chance to take the bait back to the colony. Read the labels of the product you buy. Look for something that is a residual, that way it lasts long after you have sprayed. To keep future ants from your home, keep the food cleaned up and put up!
