Having both sugar and protein out will guarantee that, no matter their daily diet needs, you have what they ate looking for. The ants will eat some and take some back to the colony. Not to mention, they will inform the other ants of the food source too. Baits do not function by killing ants right away. The effect will not take place until after there has been time enough to spread the bait in the colony. This serves as the only way to truly eliminate your ant problem, killing them at the source.

Without killing the colony, you could possibly be battling the same ants for months. Once your ants are gone, then it would be wise to spray an insecticide that kills on contact. You do not want to spray something of that nature while you have an ant bait out, for you would end up killing the ants before they got a chance to take the bait back to the colony.
