Sometimes power equipment comes with many safety features. A safety guard is one such feature and power tools used in grinding and cutting usually come with one. You want to avoid removing the guards just because it is more convenient. Due to all the debris, you could end up easily hurting a hand, your face or your eyes. It is critical that you also wear safety glasses. Along with the safety glasses, leather gloves should always be worn to ensure adequate hand protection. These are all easy to remember and common sense safety considerations. Unfortunately, there seems to be a percentage of people who will ignore them and get hurt.
If you have a lot of rags stored in your work shed or around your work bench, then take care with how you store them.
There is a concept of fire loading that is often heard in industrial settings. Rooms that have an abundance of flammable material may be more prone to a fire. You need to remember to always store material soaked in flammable solvents so that it has little chance of becoming a danger. By placing these in an airtight container, it is less likely they will burn.
An additional safety issue we need to address is the use of potent bonding agents and adhesives. These chemical agents can be a danger to your home, as well as to yourself. Don't try to work with potent chemical products, such as adhesives and glues, without wearing protective gloves. The kind that are necessary are the heavy-duty latex gloves. You can also find heavy duty gloves for working with chemicals, and we have seen these at the local Home Depot. A lot of chemicals, such as the adhesives you may need to use, can be carcinogenic. And they can also cause chemical burns on your skin, a major issue. Please include a mask respirator that has an attached filter system in your preparations if you plan to work in an area that has poor ventilation. This is not an option.
It is impossible to cover all the possibilities with the various hazards around the home. By working carefully, and not quickly, you will maintain a high safety level. Problems with safety are most easily avoided you do not take shortcuts when doing a project.
