Roofing is a subject about which every homeowner should have some knowledge. It not only covers the house but is also indicative of the quality of life for those living inside the home.
Energy Efficiency and Money Savings
Energy and cost efficiency are two factors that weigh heavily on many homeowners minds when deciding whether to change their roofing. Contractors and housing experts have been eagerly trying to find ways to address these two demands with simple solutions. This goal has been achieved by using advanced tubular skylights. Specialized tubular skylights, if installed in a house, can distribute light to the entire room while minimizing the penetration of ultraviolet rays. In addition, tubular skylights can be connected to electric lighting to maximize lighting at night. Of course, to ensure that this type of technological advancement is a safe and proper solution for putting in a home, it is always best to inquire about it through a reputable contractor in the local area.
Different Materials and Their Benefits
There are many different types of roofing material available in the market that offers huge benefits other than just being used as housetop coverings. Before speaking to a contractor, it is better to first be educated about the different options that are available for use as housetop coverings as well as their useful benefits. Following are some insightful ideas:
• Tiles – Materials used for this type of roof covering are made from tough, hardy components such as ceramic and clay and sometimes even glass. Tiles have a wide variety of colors that are available and many architectural designs from which to choose. Their benefits include: durability in colder climates and high winds; limited maintenance needs; and energy efficiency.
• Shingles – Fiberglass and organic-mat are the two basic types of asphalt shingles. Fiberglass versions consist of glass fiber material coated with asphalt and manufactured in the shape of shingles. Organic-mat varieties are derived from wood saturated with asphalt for waterproofing. Fiberglass versions are easier to haul around and have a better fire rating when compared to organic-mat ones. Organic-mat shingles are tougher and more flexible during cold weather.
• Metal – One of the most popular forms of residential metal roofs are the standing-seam type. They can also be designed to resemble other types of housetop coverings such as clay tiles, shakes, and more. Some of their benefits are: durability; low weight; fire resistance; wide color variety; energy efficiency; and almost maintenance-free. These are the reasons why more homeowners are switching to metal for their housetop covering needs.
• Flat Roofs - There are three common types of materials, as follows: (1) Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), which is a reflective cool product that is energy-efficient especially in southern climates. This type of flat roof covering offers resistance to chemicals like acids, greases and oils; (2) Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM), which has existed with proven performance for 45 years and provides excellent usage in all types of weather and is low maintenance. It is most widely used in climates where cooling demands are greater. It is easy to install – in fact, it does not require any complex equipment or special tools; (3) Modified Bitumen is a housetop covering that is hybrid-built. It is flexible, UV resistant, and has several options for surfacing.
With all of the stylish roofs available, along with the many roofing requirements faced by individual homeowners, it is best to consult with one of the reputable contractors in the local area. Instead of trying to guess at the type of roofing system that is best for a specific house, talk to a contractor who offers many choices with more benefits other than just covering the home!
