Being earth friendly is not just about recycling but can actually involve home roofing as well. A challenge every homeowner is faced with is deciding what kind of building material they would like to place over the top of their home. Energy efficiency should not only be taken into account; it should be one of the most important factors when considering options for this decision. Manufacturers are aware of this fact which is why most of the roofing materials currently, like shingles, are created to be a crossover between energy efficiency and ability to be recycled.
Whether one prefers saving energy or recycling elements, choosing the right roofing make-up is very important in designing a building that is earth friendly. Knowing how to better improve the system that is in place is essential. If done correctly, using a material that will decrease power usage can create a ‘green’ home, which will take care of two crucial concerns at the same time. There are many techniques that can help homeowners be innovative with their home roofing system.
Eco-Friendly Shingles
Installing recycled shingles is a ‘green’ option that a homeowner can employ. It helps to decrease waste because this version uses reclaimed building material. Using a non-recycled shingle will actually add chemicals to the atmosphere when it’s exposed to the sun’s heat. Moreover, this version has longer life spans which are around 50 years, as compared to the 15-year life span of its counterpart, the non-recycled type.
To make them more efficient, a reflective coating can be applied which allows the roofing to reflect 80 percent of the heat it receives from the sun. Compared to uncoated ones that typically absorb 80 percent of heat from sunlight, reflective-coated shingles contribute less heat to the inside of the house. Household air-conditioning systems will in turn work less, saving more of the costs that can skyrocket during summer months associated with use of cooling systems.
Metal versus Shingles
Choosing metal roofing saves more energy as compared to traditional shingles. It is recommended to use metal that contains materials that are lead free. The common types are steel, aluminum or copper which are good reflectors of sunlight and therefore retain less heat. In addition, when coated with light colors, it enhances the reflection of sunlight, thus keeping houses even cooler during summer months. Metal roofing has the strength to withstand harsh weather elements better, allow for snow to easily slide off, and it is considered as the best rain-gathering system.
Natural Materials
Natural fibers are excellent for going green too! Clay and slate are both created from natural materials which are inherently energy-efficient; disposal can be accomplished without adding pollution to the environment; and as compared to shingles are less toxic. During summer time or in warmer climates, corrugated clay tiles allow a better flow of air through the roof surface and will keep the inside of the building cooler.
Energy Star
There is also roofing with an Energy Star label that homeowners can select which is both cost and energy-efficient. The Energy Star specification can be found on several types of products such as metal roofing, single-ply membranes and coating products. If building products bear this label, homeowners can be assured of benefits such as the good quality of material used, decreased pollution contribution, and reduced absorption of heat.
Lastly, the decision to select the right roof greatly depends on several factors such as: available budget; level of commitment to being "green;" the location’s climate; and the desired design of the home. There are many ways to be innovative when it comes to a building’s roofing including creating a structure that can lower pollution, be more energy-efficient, and using non-toxic recycled material. Taking care of the environment and being a good steward of generated power not only saves in energy costs; it also makes the earth a better place for generations to come!
