Many different pests can invade your home. One of the most common is the carpenter ant. Carpenter ants can cause a lot of damage in your home. Keep reading to learn about these potentially harmful pests.
Carpenter ants can invade your home just like termites. They resemble each other in appearance so many people get the pests confused. Both types of pests cause damage to wood. The difference is termites actually eat wood.
Carpenter ants do not eat wood, but they do cause a lot of damage to it. Instead of eating it, they simply remove wood in the process of creating tunnels and galleries. The amount of damage these pests cause can vary.
If the infestation is still relatively mild, then there will not be a lot of damage done. However, this will certainly change if the infestation is allowed to grow. The problem is made worse because of the fact carpenter ants typically infiltrate wood that is already weakened for some reason.
If you have any moist or decayed wood in your home, then carpenter ants will likely find it. You can have this problem if there are any leaks or excess condensation in your home. Areas which do not get enough air circulation may also pose a problem.
There are many different places carpenter ants can make their home. They can build nests around sinks, showers, dishwashers, and behind bathroom tiles. You may also find them in the beams of your attic or even under the insulation of your subfloor.
Carpenter ants can also make nests outside of your home. This is particularly a problem if you have rotting trees or stumps in your yard. If the trees are healthy, then the ants likely will not be able to chew through them.
If carpenter ants make a nest in a tree in your yard, you should not leave them alone. They commonly build satellite nests, which they can make in your home. The main nest only has to be located in a location that provides moisture.
However, the satellite nests do not have to be located near a water source. This means they can build a nest virtually anywhere in your home. Carpenter ants can build these satellite nests up to 100 yards from the main nest.
If you have spotted carpenter ants around your home, then you may have a problem. It certainly will not go away by itself, so you should do something about it as soon as possible.
