Moss tends to grow on pavements that have low traffic and where there is lot of water stagnation. High pressure cleaning pavers should be done regularly throughout the year. Damp weather conditions and lack of adequate sunlight contribute to the development of moss on pavements.
Regular cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and periodic maintenance measures will prevent the formation of moss in the first place. This requires cleaning the pavement daily or on alternate days. Use a stick broom and sweep away all the accumulated debris on the pavement.
After sweeping away the pavement you might pour clean water on to the pavement and then scrape away any existing moss with the help of a wiping brush. Take care not to use a brush that has hard bristles as it will damage the surface of the pavement. Always clean the pavement with clean water after scraping or scrubbing.
Total elimination of the moss might not be possible but regular external house washing will ensure that there is no accumulation of detritus. A garden hose can also be used to target water at high force on to the part of pavement infested with moss. The powerful jet of water will root out the moss to a great extent. A hoe can be used to scrape away any remnants and then clean water poured on to it to complete the cleaning process.
Powdered detergent can also be used in high pressure cleaning pavers. The detergent has to be mixed with clean water in the ratio of 1:10 in a bucket. The solution has to be poured on to the pavement and allowed to soak. After fifteen minutes you can use a hose pipe to wash away the detergent solution that will rid the pavement of moss.
There are moss killers available in the market that effectively eliminate the moss and also help in arresting regrowth. The downside of these killers is that they scar the pavement permanently with an orange hue. This is due to the ferrous sulphate that is an essential ingredient in most moss killers. The iron part of the ferrous sulphate reacts with the pavement materials and gives a rusty appearance.
If moss killers are used in external house washing it is always advisable to take the advice of an expert in the field and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the product label. Use moss killers only to eliminate large clusters of moss or the stubborn ones.
If using a chemical is inevitable it is always advisable to choose moss killers that do not have ferrous sulphate content in order to ensure that there is no staining of the pavement. Talk to the local municipal authorities before using any chemicals as in some states usage of certain moss killers, fungicides, and weed killers is banned.
All the moss that is removed should be gathered in one place and disposed off in a proper manner to prevent reemergence. Moss does not penetrate in to the substratum like algae and lichens and therefore cleaning pavers infested with it is comparatively easy.
High pressure cleaning Sydney has long been the first choice in professional driveway cleaning and house washing services.
