So far in this series we've covered tips for setting up your Facebook Fan Page, and how to find people to be your Fans. Now I think it's important to share some of my tips on what not to do with your Fan Page. Check these out and integrate them into your overall Facebook Marketing approach, because if your brand is scared of customer interaction and you behave like a bit of an ass then it will have very negative repercussions. Here’s my not-so-gentle reminder of what not to do on Facebook:
-
Not letting Fans post on your Wall: Big mistake, huge! (See where I’m going with this…). If you don’t let your Fans post you your Wall you’re basically saying, "I trust you enough to take your money for my products, but not enough to let you talk to me in real life". Can you imagine going up to a shop assistant to ask a question, only to be told "talk to the hand" as she turns her back and walks away. If you don’t have an open Wall, you may as well not have a Facebook Page. Amen.
-
Not updating your Fan Page: If you go into a shop in September and don’t see anything interesting, then you go back in July and nothing has changed, you’re not going to bother ever going back again. Show your business has a pulse and show some respect for your Fans by keeping your Page updated.
-
Don’t post your website link as a reply to a post: It’s cringeworthy spam. I’m assuming that everyone reading this Guide would never do this, so I won’t go into detail. If Fans want to buy from you or use your services, they know where to find you so just relax and focus on your content and adding value.
-
Don’t set up a Profile instead of a Fan Page for your business: Fan Pages have very useful tools for businesses and allow custom functionality, competitions and adverts. Also, they’re set up to protect Fans’ privacy. We’re in the age of data protection so show you respect your Fans and take your business seriously by opting for a Fan Page over a fake personal profile. Also if Facebook finds out about you then they’ll shut you down, very embarrassing.
