If you are anything like I used to be, it seemed like everything was strewn all over the family room. The tables ended up full of junk, old newspaper usually got piled up on one end of a table and homework papers ended up spread out all over the place. Board games never seemed to get put away and I often found missing pieces in between the couch cushions.

Do not get discouraged when you look around at the current state of your family room. It can be a clean, fun and functional room again. So, just what do you do with all the stuff?

First of all, everything needs an assigned spot. I suggest having a shelving unit or cabinet in the room that can house all of the board games, newspapers and yes, homework papers too. You should have a designated area for the board games and other toys, that way when game time is over, the items can be put back where they belong.

Newspapers and magazines should also have a shelf. The best way to keep things organized and off the tables and floor is to have a place to store them.

I would also suggest having inbox and outbox type organizer set up for papers. It makes it easier that way to keep track of what papers need immediate attention. You could have one for your papers and also another labeled for your child's homework. When your child gets home from school, the homework should be placed in the designated bin. Then, as soon as the homework is finished, you can then have your child put it in their backpack for school (no more lost homework).

As you begin to designate certain areas for each item, place the item there now. Go through the room, putting the items, that belong there, away. Throw away any trash that may have piled up, get rid of any dead plants, and dust every surface. Remove any items that belong elsewhere, and put them back in the room where they belong. Now is also a good time to get rid of any items that you no longer need or use.

Be sure to place items, that are used frequently, in an easily accessible location. Do not place these items in an out-of-reach place. You do not want to have to climb up and down a ladder, every time you want to get that item. You are also less likely to put this item back there too, because it will be so inconvenient to do so.

Once you have this area decluttered, you can then include this room in your regular cleaning routine. That way you should only have to vacuum and dust this room, since everything else should already be in its specific place.
