In any medical institution, nurses are required to dress up in uniforms so that people can be able to distinguish them from the subordinate staff and clients visiting the institution to seek for medical treatment. The idea of wearing nurse uniforms starts all the way when nurses are undergoing training in their respective medical schools in order to inculcate in them a habit or norm that will be expected of them whenever they assume the role of nurses in health facilities after completing training. Nurse uniforms play an integral part in molding the character and expectations of nurses in the job market.

There are various benefits associated with nurse uniforms. One, an even dress code among nursing students improves their attentiveness in school as students do not have that much time to select what to wear each and every day due to the fact they have an even set of dressing. This even set of dressing among all nursing students enables students not to be deviated by dressing code of their fellow peers as all of them are dressed uniformly. When wearing nursing uniforms, this enables students to focus on their studies and making them feel as if they are real nurses thus preparing them psychologically.

Secondly, uniforms such as a scrub top are less costly thus this saves the students the expense of maintaining a hefty wardrobe. This factor tries to maintain equality among all students as one student will not feel less privileged than the other student. Also, nurse uniforms are comfortable for students because a majority of them are made of loose cotton that enables students to feel relaxed and comfortable thus improving their concentration.

When nursing students are undergoing training they always come into contact with a lot of germs and dirt, but this does not distract them from carrying on with their usual research activities because nurse uniforms are much easier to clean due to their loosened fitting fabric. Also, whenever such uniforms are destroyed their cost of replacement is not much of a task due to their inexpensive nature.

Nurse uniforms are associated with some bit of shortcomings more so on their functionality. These uniforms are of less or no use to students who are not directly involved with clinical nursing activities as wearing the uniforms does not symbolize or prepare them for their future roles.

Uniforms are also regarded as tools of restricting one’s individual expression. Not all students are interested in demonstrating their skills or desire to practice nursing through putting on uniforms as this limits their individual interests. Most students feel as if wearing uniforms diminishes or waters down their individuality thus losing the academic focus. Therefore, this type of students may at times be tempted to carry with them home clothes in order to change after school to make them resemble other people who are not wearing uniforms. Due to the loose nature of nurse uniforms, the uniforms may not be appropriate during the cold season especially when the students are out on extracurricular activities or field projects.
