There are three common types of stink bugs in North America they are the Green, Brown, and Brown Marmorated stink bug. And aside from smelling bad they all share other traits including what they eat and rapid reproduction. And the fact that they share these and other traits makes stink bug control something that can be done without any great specialization.

Indoors

To prevent an indoor infestation from occurring the first step would be to keep the bugs outside. Making sure that your home is not easy for them to enter can do this. To do this you will need to seal any gaps in or around your foundation, caulk around window and door frames, and mending any tares in screens. Doing this will not only keep out stink bugs and other pest but also lower your power bills. Aside from these efforts you can use traps and preventative pesticides. Traps should be placed in dark spaces where the light that they use to attract stink bugs can be plainly seen. And pesticides should be sprayed around base boards and points of entry to keep these bugs out.

Outdoors

If you garden you and want to prevent these pest from attacking your plants you can use an insecticidal dust (i.e. Sevin Dust) to keep them off your plants. To apply insecticidal dust you need to use a duster that delivers puffs of the compound on to plants. The insect then absorbs the insecticide when they come in contact with the treated plant. And while many dust are safe to use on fruits and vegetables you should check the labels before applying them and wash your crops before you eat them.

You can also use liquid and granular pesticides for out door stink bug control. To keep stink bugs and other away from your home by using liquid pesticides spray a wide band around your home. Granules that don’t work as baits, like Talstar can be used to prevent stink bugs as well. When using any pesticide make sure that you follow any safety or usages guidelines listed on the packaging.

In addition to pesticides you can also use traps outdoors. The outdoor trap will emit light and a scent that stinkbugs find enticing to draw them into the trap’s glue lined interior. When using traps either indoors or out, make sure to check it regularly because they can fill up quickly.
