Steel buildings, like any other building in an ever changing climate, require insulation to regulate the environment inside and help save money from heating, cooling and moisture control inside. In order to choose the best steel building insulation for your budget and needs, consider some of the most important point before making the final decision because whether you choose and expensive material or not, it’s still an investment in the end.
Assess the Environment
Prior to purchasing steel building insulation, it’s very important to properly assess the environment both inside and out. While all insulation types are essentially made for the same purpose, some types will work better in particular environmental conditions, like high humidity, while other insulation types will not.
Four Main Steel Building Insulation Types
There are four main steel building insulation types that are used all over the world. Each one is used to retain heat, block escaping air, control moisture and dull noises from inside and out but they also vary in price, so finding the best one for your budget and need is very important.
Fiberglass
One of the most popular choices for steel building insulation is fiberglass. It’s effective and inexpensive and fairly easy to install or replace. This type of insulation is generally used in colder climates since there is less humidity and works very well to retain heat. If used in areas where there is high humidity, it will be prone to sagging, which loses its effectiveness and will also succumb to mold growth.
Rigid Foam
The next popular choice for fairly inexpensive insulation is rigid foam. They are thin sheets that are placed side by side, perfectly blocking moisture from outdoor and escaping heat from indoors. This is an ideal material to have in dry or humid conditions and for anyone with a tight budget.
Spray Foam
Spray foam is one of the best choices for steel building insulation. You can spray it in liquid form in any angle you like and it will expand into the smallest areas, perfectly blocking holes and gaps that need to be sealed. Although one of the more expensive choices for insulation, it’s also one of the most effective in any climate.
Reflective
One of the top insulation choices is reflective insulation and it’s used in many different buildings and climates. It has a layer of reflective material like aluminum foil paired with a layer of foam or air pockets. It’s a very effective choice for heat, moisture and noise, however in colder climates, it’s recommended to apply it with one of the other common insulation types to truly retain the heat well.
R-Value for Insulation
The R-value is used to measure the amount of heat that can go through a material used for insulation.
While the R-value applies to fiberglass and the foam insulation types, it is not a measurable gauge for the performance of standard radiant barriers like aluminum foil since the heat is radiated from its surface, not transferred through it, but when it comes to reflective insulation, there is an extra layer of foam or air bubbles placed with the radiant barrier, it can then have a proper R-value rating.
Budget
Although it may seem like purchasing the cheapest insulation is the best choice for a limited budget, it’s very important to consider the investment in the long run. Buying something cheap and "good enough" for the short term is certainly one way to go but this can cause problems in the future. If the insulation is not suitable for the climate indoors and out, it will deteriorate and lose its function faster, which could affect the items you are trying to protect within the building.
Losing the effectiveness of the insulation will also cost you more for heating and cooling, which is on top of moisture control. In the end, you will have to pay to have new steel building insulation installed instead of spending a little more for the proper type from the beginning.
