The heart of the ancient world and an empire which reached from Britain to north Africa, Rome is now the capital of Italy and has embodied much of the culture of the western world for than two millennia. Nicknamed "the eternal city", it showcases some of the most magnificent architecture from throughout the ages as testament to its lasting cultural, historical and political significance. The romance of the city has drawn tourism for centuries and it endures as one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world.
Best Time to Travel
With so much to see, it's best to avoid the height of Summer for your trip to Rome – the heat can be hard to endure and air conditioning is not particularly widespread. Heat exhaustion tends to diminish the holiday experience. Also, during the second half of August much of Rome shuts down while the citizens' annual exodus to the beach occurs.
Amazing Attractions to See
I can't do justice to what Rome has to offer in this article, so here are a few of the favourites.
The Colosseum - A feat of Roman engineering still impressive by today's standards and the stage for epic gladiatorial battles. Britain has nothing like this. You would be remiss not to seize the opportunity to see it for yourself. Flanked by other Roman ruins, this is a great place to begin a trip through ancient Rome.
The Vatican City - Technically not even in Italy, the Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state in the world and the seat of the papacy. Even if you have no religious convictions, it is worth seeing to understand the impact religion still has on the world that justifies an entire country dedicated to Roman Catholicism. Given good weather St Peter's square hosts and audience with the Pope on Wednesdays.
Exquisite and Delicious Restaurants
You're probably aware of much of what's worth visiting in Rome or you wouldn't be reading this article. However, in the Trastevere area of Rome, book bars are the in thing. Like institutionalised book clubs, book bars provide a liberal atmosphere in which to discuss literature new and old and even rub shoulders with the authors themselves.
Most of the world is familiar with the basics of Italian food, but you haven't had had pizza until you've had it in Italy. Da Baffetto, a stone's throw from Piazza Navona, offers an authentic Italian dining experience and is arguably Rome's most popular pizza. And remember, you're in a wine-producing country – do you really think they export the best stuff? The Rome Wine Festival is open to the public and is held in May.
Like any modern city, Rome has a busy nightlife and lively club scene to compliment the galleries, museums and opera houses. For a rounded experience, cut loose and enjoy the evening after a day soaking up the culture.
Getting Around in Rome
Rome can be reached by car or train from the UK if you're feeling adventurous, but most people will opt to fly. Besides being the most direct, it's probably also the cheapest and there are often good deals to be had if you're willing to fly at short notice or unsociable times. Once you reach the city, public transport is very straightforward – simply buy a 1, 3 or 7 day pass for all transport within the city. There is no zone system. The metro is somewhat basic, operating just two lines intersecting at Termini station, but the bus service is much more comprehensive. If you would prefer to hire a car, Avis have hire points at the airport and throughout the city. Prices start at around £90 for two days.
Accommodation is available for most budgets, but beware that Rome is not the cheapest city in Europe. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that only the places near the medieval core of the city are much good for exploring on foot. For a decent balance between price and location try Navona, tucked away on a sidestreet near Piazza Navona. Unpretentious accommodation with breakfast thrown in – all you need when there's so much to see outdoors.
If you do decide to opt for car hire in Italy, it is a good idea to check out the rates and car hire companies before you travel. AnyCarHire can help to organize a car hire Rome Fiumicino Airport to be waiting for you when you arrive, leaving you to have a stress free journey in complete relaxation.
