There are millions of construction workers in the world and the number is rising by the day. Arguably, construction is the world’s largest industry and there are many dependants of construction. As far as safety is concerned the construction sector is in the red. In the past two decades thousands of construction workers have lost their lives in their work places. Most accidents in construction sites result in serious injuries and even death. For some survivors these accidents leave unforgettable scars in their lives. To minimize the risk of such accidents, a CDM coordinator should check to ensure that a site is safe and develop safety procedures.
Common causes of accidents at constructions sites include fragile roofs, falling from ladders, roof lights and scaffolds. Other accidents that occur at construction sites include being hit by excavators, falling loads, and collapsing structures. Other serious cases include touching of chemicals and cement with bare hands or coming in to contact with electric wires and handling hazardous gases and dust.
However, there are some ways that help ensure utmost safety for constructors. First one can contact a safety consultant to get advice on ways of improving safety standards at construction sites. Another crucial safety technique is reducing the number of scaffold and ladders being used. Ladders should also be used correctly and only when necessary. Scaffold towers should be erected by qualified personnel. Safer systems should be adopted when repairing of fragile roofs. Trips and slips on slippery floors can be avoided by placing warning signs.
Adoption of safer methods of managing traffic is crucial. Quicker transportation of injured people to health facilities can help reduce fatalities. Construction workers should also get first aid training so as to reduce cases of unwarranted deaths from minor injuries. Effective planning of site designs and layouts also reduces the risk of injuries and accidents. Public awareness of key issues concerning safety standards is encouraged so as to help people cope well in the events of accidents and mishaps.
Creating awareness among construction workers on the possibility of death and manifold injuries is mandatory. The workers should get appropriate advice on safety during work. Governments and DGSA play a very critical role in maintaining high safety standards in construction and other areas that pose accident threats.
