Wrought iron wall art pieces are extremely durable and with proper care can be handed down to the next generation with simple maintenance.

Wrought iron products are hand crafted causing each piece to be an original work of art. There are products available in a multitude of designs. Some have extremely intricate designs and some are simple. These pieces go well with many different decorating styles and can create a dramatic focal point on any wall. Normal maintenance only requires dusting with a soft cloth. The new dusting wands, work well to clean wrought iron work as they fit in all the curves on ornamental iron. As needed, washing the wrought iron products with a mild dish detergent and then thoroughly drying is all that is needed to keep your wrought iron wall art pieces beautiful. In marine locations, this may have to be completed more often. A light coating of furniture or automotive wax can also be applied to help protect the piece. If your piece is extremely ornate, it is recommended to use a spray wax. This should not be used on candle holders or fireplace screens as it is flammable.

Wrought Iron's biggest enemy is rust. Some pieces are left to rust naturally to create a rustic look. Many wrought iron pieces are powder coated or painted to prevent rust from occurring. Even with these protective coatings, a simple scratch can cause the piece to start to rust. If rust appears, simply sand off the damaged area with a coarse sand paper. Next, you will need to sand with a finer grade of sand paper to create a smooth surface. You can also use fine grade wet sand paper. This will give the area a very smooth finish. If there is only surface rust, you may use fine steel wool dipped in kerosene to remove the rust. If your wrought iron wall art is severely rusted, you may apply naval jelly, or any of the paint strippers on the market. These products will not only remove the rust, but will also remove the finish. With any of these products, be sure to work in a well ventilated area, away from any open flames. Also, wear protective gloves and eye wear. It is advised to read the product labels for any additional warnings when working with these products.

After removing all of the rust, wipe the area clean with a tack cloth to remove all dust particles. You can then touch up with an exterior rust inhibitor paint to match the color of your piece. This paint is available at your local hardware or automotive store. Hold the can 8 – 10 inches from the wrought iron piece and keep the can moving while spraying. It is better to apply a couple of thin coats to prevent runs. Finally, allow your ornamental iron to dry thoroughly.
