When the Dartford Borough council decided for the first time to install an automatic power protection system on to their primary site, with a diesel generator, for their 5,000 employees at their council head office, after due diligence they chose PowerContinuity Systems. The council representative Dave Webber remarked, ‘We are pleased to confirm that PowerContinuity Systems performance was true to their commitment, with the project completed within the time frame and to budget.’

PowerContinuity Systems designed, manufactured and installed the complete system, incorporating a diesel generator with 72 hour fuel tanks. Repeated mains fail testing, an integral part of all installations proved the system.

Premonition?

At 12:40 on the 20th of July the Dartford borough council’s services were fully operational during an electricity blackout which seriously damaged high voltage electricity cables in the Dartford area and which caused a loss of electricity supplies to 100,000 customers at its peak, stretching across the Dartford, Crayford, Bexleyheath, Erith, and Orpington areas.

During the outage there was relatively limited information about the restoration of power supply to Dartford. Though in most cases a continuous and reliable power supply was not available until Wednesday an intermittent supply for three hour periods was available in most places.

The Council’s generator continued to supply power to the Civic Centre during this time, however other buildings were still affected, except where specific emergency power provisions had been made. That the Dartford council’s services were still operation during the blackout was thanks to PowerContinuity Systems and the council for, realising the need for an adequate Uninterruptible Power Solution, which was installed on the site in January, earlier in the year. Dartford Council has since stated that ‘ Our own generator became operational 6 seconds into the power outage incident,’ allowing the council to work through the crisis.

PowerContinuity Systems proved that failure is not an option and the council was able to continue functioning during the crisis as our systems responded to their needs, though this just underlines the responsibility required by institutions and government organisations to continue to install and maintain power crisis solutions, which will allow them to continue operate through such eventualities. PowerContinuity saved the day and the seven days of non-stop power provision whilst the grid power was repaired and re-instated to Dartford.
