Bed Bug description
The bedbug is a small animal that is very intrusive. It measure from 4 to 8 mm and is fairly oval and flat. You can observe it with the naked eye!
The common scientific name of the bed bug is Cimex lectularius.
It does move slowly so you have the opportunity see it before it ran away. It fears the light, so it lives at night.
It attacks the man in order to eat: the bite of the insect is not dangerous but is sometimes impressive!
It reproduces very fast and is fairly resistant, so it is very hard to get rid of it!
The estimated life of the animal vary but it lives on average from a few months to a year long.
History of bed bug
Bedbugs were common at the beginning of the 20th century, all over the world. It is known to be close to human since immemorial time.
Since the end of World War II, using insecticides killed them almost completely! Unfortunately, we observe a giant comeback in past years, particularly in North America but also in Europe (it is known as "punaise de lit" in France), mainly in large cities.
The insect travels with humans, according to international flights and because of increased mobility possibilities.
What dangers to the bed bug?
There is no real physical risks caused by bed bugs. Its bite does not transmit diseases and is rarely infectious.
But an invasion is problematic because it attacks all the objects and it is difficult to kill the bugs. Eventually, by regularly stressing its victims and preventing them from resting, they can turn paranoid!
Its rapid spread makes the animal an issue of concern for most government's health services.
Bed bug: any treatment?
Getting rid of bed bugs is hard and tedious. Do not hesitate to call a specialist!
With care and application, clear out all parts affected by the insect. Isolate, sort, suck up, throw away: here is the main term of the treatment. Often the main room to clean is the bedroom.
Various products can be used: insecticides (chemical and natural), powders, insulated furniture. However, it is usual to have to treat several times to overcome bed bugs. And do not forget, be careful with these products, often dangerous for humans! There is also a natural predator, the scutigera coleoptrata, a kink of centipede.
Finally, to exterminate it, use the hot and/or cold. You have to expose your items to over 60d Celsius for 3 hours or at -15d Celsius for ten days. The insect probably will not stand that!
I had to deal with bedbugs few weeks ago and I want to spread the word on how to manage this insect's invasion. If you want more information on the bed bug ("punaise de lit" in french) topic, please have a look to my blog which offers assistance on this topic.
