OST and PST are two twin files holding each and every detail of your MS Outlook. They are single large files which can grow up to large sizes but store every Outlook data within them. PST needs to be taken care from time to time as it works as the data pointer in Outlook. OST files on the other hand don’t require any maintenance and also allows you to work offline in absence of Exchange server. On availability of Exchange server, the send/receive command synchronizes both the tables and presents all the data in MS Outlook.
You might have heard a lot about OST to PST. When, why and how to perform that remains a viable question. Let’s look at them one by one.
When do we need to convert OST to PST?
Apart from letting us work offline, OST file serves a very valuable purpose. It acts as a backup file for MS Outlook. On synchronization, every data whether be it mails, attachments, calendar or contacts, all are saved in OST files too. Outlook profile is readily vulnerable to corruption. They can get corrupted due to
1.Abrupt system and server shutdown
2.Increased size of OST file
3.Bad sectors in the Storage Device
4.Virus attack on the system
Under any such unforeseen cases, MS outlook can’t display any data on the screen. Then we need to exchange OST to Outlook PST files.
Why do we need to convert OST to PST?
Well any of the above cases of corruption definitely affects the PST file at first. PST files tend to be of no use and the only hope remains to be OST files. Adhere OST files to retain all your Outlook data but here comes the hindrance. OST is typically tied to a specific profile or Exchange Server account settings which is not readable in Outlook directly. The only way out is to convert OST to PST files and make them usable once again.
You may also need to convert OST to PST:
1.If one works in multi-user MS Outlook environment
2.If Outlook users create MS Exchange OST files in the network even when they are offline
3.If Exchange Server is damaged and you are unable to access data stored in OST files
4.If you are in urgent need of some output driven source to access OST file
How do we convert OST to PST?
Well this is the final and most important factor. If you can open the OST file in off-line mode, you can then create a PST and simply copy the contents of the OST over to the PST. But if there is a version compatibility issue, Exchange server is corrupted or files are damaged, then the only choice is to convert it with the help of recovery tool. Use OST to PST convertor and let it perform the entire task for you.
