Household Tips For DIY Carpet Cleaning

Living your carpets a good diy steam cleaning does not have to be difficult and here a few tips that you can use to get your carpet cleaning done right.

Removing dog dirt from your carpet.

So you arrive down stairs in the morning to discover your young puppy dog has had "the squirts" during the night.

First remove the dog from the scene of the accident (carry the pup, so he does not do more damage walking his mess further across the carpet).

Open the windows and let some fresh air in!then go and get a small shovel and plastic bag.

To begin the carpet cleaning, remove as much of the dog dirt as possible by shovelling it into the bag.

Next get some old white "Terry Towels" or white cotton sheets or white paper napkins (coloured cloths or coloured paper napkins could bleed colour into your carpet) and blot up as much of the remaining mess from the carpet as possible, do not wipe or rub the carpet just blot up as much as you can.

Now get a can of traditional white Shaving Foam NOT GEL (gel does not work and the colourant in it may stain your carpet) get right into the carpet pile to spray the foam, do this at each of the stains. The foam acts even better if you can get it right into the fibres because the expanding and rising bubbles in the foam will also help to lift the dirt. Work the foam right into the stain (you might want to wear some old kitchen gloves).

Leave the foam for at least 15-20 minutes.

Now get a white towel or other white cloth and soak it in hot water, wring out the excess water from the towel and rub away at the spots.

It is surprising how well this carpet cleaning technique works.

It is better than any "over the counter" carpet cleaning agent you might buy.

Removing Candle Grease from carpet:

Another great carpet cleaning technique.

Get a clothes iron and an electrical extension lead and plug it in close to the candle grease. Set the iron to a warm setting (not too hot).

Do not leave the Iron on the carpet!!!!!

While the iron is warming get an ordinary kitchen knife and warm the blade with boiling water.

Using the back of the blade (the blunt side) scrape away as much of the candle wax as you can.

Now get a white "Terry Towel"or some brown paper or brown paper bag (ensure there is no writing on the paper, you do not want to be transferring ink stains to your carpet) and place it over the remains of the candle wax in the carpet and rub the iron across the towelling or brown paper a few times, this will melt the candle wax which will be blotted up into the towel or brown paper. A towel usually works best.

Please ensure the iron is not very hot so as not to damage the carpet fibres.

Remove Chewing Gum

A carpet cleaning technique for removing chewing gum from a carpet.

Warm an ordinary kitchen knife in a mug of boiling water, then use the blunt side or back of the knife as a spatula to remove as much of the gum as carefully as you can.

Next get some ice cubes and place them in a plastic freezer bag, rub the bagged ice across the remaining gum, this will cause the gum to harden and go brittle.

Now use the blunt side of a kitchen knife to scrape or chip away at the remaining gum.

Patience and time is the key to success here.
