There’s no getting around it, bathrooms use an incredible amount of water, much of which is wasted. In this day and age there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of water that needs to be used and still make full use of a luxury bathroom. If you are in the position of having a new bathroom installed then it is the perfect time to build water conservation into your bathroom. A bath uses around 80 litres of water, and a power shower uses even more at a whopping 90 litres. So much for taking a shower instead of a bath in order to save water. However, there are certain ways you can save water within the bathroom, let’s take a look.
Choose low-flush toilets. These toilets use only six litres of water per flush, whereas cisterns integrated into bathrooms before 2001 use nine litres. Even older cisterns use even more water with 13 litres of water per flush. It is estimated that as much as 30% of water used within the bathroom is via the toilet. Low-flush toilets are certainly a great choice if you want to save water.
Use a HIPPO bag. If you are stuck with your 9+ litre toilet then it is wise to use HIPPO bags to reduce water output via the toilet. Luckily, these bags are free and readily available!
Check that the overflow within your toilet is not running and that water is not running into the bowl in between flushes. If it is, it may be that the ball cock is too high, and you may need to call in a plumber to rectify this for you.
Do not leave the tap running when brushing your teeth. This can waste up-to 6 litres of water per minute. So if you usually spend around three minutes brushing your teeth, and you brush twice a day, you could be wasting a massive 36 litres of water every single day!
Opt for a standard shower rather than a power shower. Standard showers use less than half the amount of water as bath or a power shower. Power showers can certainly be luxurious, but if you want to do your bit for the environment you have to make sacrifices.
By enquiring about these simple inexpensive measures when you have a new bathroom fitted you can have a bathroom that is not only luxurious and modern but also good for the environment.
