There are a lot of reasons why you would want to copy or rip a DVD. DVDs are the main source of entertainment for many. Those who miss out the movie releases on theatre, for them and also for collectors and for others, DVDs are the main sources of movies. DVD is a good media. With it you can watch the movie on your big TV screen through a DVD player. And that is where the limitation of DVDs comes.

DVDs require a DVD player or a DVD ROM to play. While DVDs are fairly portable, DVD players and ROMs are not. So, if you want to watch the DVD movie that you have, on the bus or train or on the coffee shop or wherever you want, you cannot. Then again if you wish to watch that movie, you have to use the DVD player or the ROM every time. You cannot just click on it and watch. Also, you cannot edit DVDs to extract the audio or some video clips because many of the DVDs come with DRM protection.

DRM is the acronym for Digital Rights Management. It uses different techniques to make sure the copyright is not violated for the digital contents. However, it is very limited in its capabilities. It cannot understand whether the user is a legal or illegal user. But its task is to stop illegal users. So it stops some actions altogether which is common for both types of users. You can watch the video but you cannot copy the content of the DVDs is one of the DRM protection that is implied on DVD. Therefore, despite being a legal owner of the DVD, you will not be able to copy the DVD contents. You have the perfect right to do so, yet you will not be able to perform that unless you remove the DRM protection off the DVD.

DVDs use VOB video format which stands for Video Object. This format is widely used in DVDs but not otherwise so it is quite difficult to work with this video format. Your handheld devices will not support this format so if you are planning to copy DVD contents on your handheld (iPhone or iPod etc.) and play it, you better abandon that plan. Also, DVD files are pretty big. If you save them on your handheld or even in your Mac, you will be using a lot of space from your memory card or HDD.

To get rid of all these problems, all you have to do is to use a DVD ripper. DVD Ripper for Mac removes the DRM protection from the DVD, rip the DVD to a specified format and also it can make the DVD movie size pretty small for you to use. If you are on Mac or want to watch the DVD movie in iPhone or iPod, you should rip the DVD to MOV video format. MOV format is supported by Apple devices so you will not have any problem with that format.

DVD rippers add a great degree of control over your DVDs, if you use the right DVD ripper.
