Action 3: Building the framework
Affix a joist at each end of the ledger implementing angle
brackets or galvanised joist hangers and verify that they are
square. Fix supporting slabs at the ends of these joists, to
maintain them level.
Fit joist hangers (using galvanised nails or screws in each
gap) alongside the ledger at 400mm (16in) intervals. Join to a further
joist at the other end to form a supporting beam parallel with the ledger.
Verify that construction is rectangular and
level at all phases.
Nail noggins 400mm (16in) away from each other between the joists to
strengthen and strengthen the platform.
Fit a 2nd joist onto the end joist for additional
strength and join with coach mounting bolts.
Idea: It is practical to use posts on concrete
floor blocks or fence post bases if you
desire to increase the deck.
Action 4: Laying the decking
Decking is the most visible part so take care and
attention to line up all fixings and lay straight with
identical spaces amongst
planks. You can set the decking planks diagonally or in other
shapes but this reveals more cut ends with problems of
cracking. Always use constant
lengths if possible.
Decking planks with an end grain are ideal. Set this way up for
reduced warping using a pair of galvanised nails,
screws or deck clips at every single joist. Use
purpose produced stainless steel or galvanised screws so that your decking isn't
spoilt by corrosion discolorations.
Use 6mm (1/4in) spacers or nails on each area of decking board to
guarantee regular gaps. This is
crucial for
venting and enables for expansion in
rainy conditions.
Suggestion: If any boards need joining, put together on
top of joists.
Action 5: Polishing off
Expand the boards over the sides of the side
joists and trim straight when all are laid. If you would like, use a fine-toothed saw to avoid cracking.
Fix on a facia board to protect the ends - if employing nails, tap
into the ends first so they are blunt to prevent cracking the decking.
Word of advice: Outdoor patio panels
are stress treated with a long-enduring chemical
procedure but the colouring will diminish after a few months.
You can choose to leave your terrace to age
by natural means or treat it with an
outer penetrating oil that soaks right into the
wood rather than resting on the surface. These come
in various timber
hues and can be brushed, sprayed or rollered onto the
planks.
Not sure if decking is definitely the right option for your
back garden? See our back garden surface area manual for more choices.
