Guys, listen up, your wedding is the one occasion where you just have to drop the Armani and Versace suits (or Next & River Island, if you may) and go all out ethnic. It's a fact, which all the ladies will verify, that Asian guys look terrific in ethnic clothes. So stop being a prude and indulge in some serious ethnic styling!!
In recent years the Asian fashion limelight has zoomed in on grooms wear and as a result the stylish male has begun to add class and panache to his wedding wardrobe. Whilst ethnic clothes were previously associated with those with a dubious sense of fashion, British Asian men are beginning to opt for traditional wear more readily than ever before and take great pride in doing so. The suit and tie combination is now increasingly passed over and we spot more and more fashion conscious bridegrooms sporting chic ethnic attire.
Fortunately, gone are the days when going ethnic meant landing up at your wedding in off the shelf kurta outfits in hideous cuts, colours and fabrics which said absolutely nothing about your individual personality or style. This is an era of designers and designer wear, be it from the UK or the Indian sub continent and their glamorous, stylish and chic offerings have bought Asian males under the spell of ethnic clothes. Indeed, many men are now devoting almost as much time and money to planning their wedding attire as the fairer sex! Ethnic outfits look highly elegant and will give you an air of sophistication and mystique.
Moreover, they convey a charisma and personality, which the suit and tie combination just doesn't seem to carry off! Given the staggering variety in colours, fabrics, cuts and styles you can be sure that wearing ethnic clothes will allow you to make a different statement for each of your wedding functions.
If the world of ethnic clothes is a mystery to you and you don't know your pagri from your mojris, allow us to extend a helping hand in finding you the perfect outfit for your big day.
What's On Offer?
Sherwanis
Wedding Sherwanis are a close fitting jacket like garment, of knee length, with a Nehru collar, which buttons all the way down the front. They are usually worn with tight fitting churidar trousers in a contrasting colour and with a khes (long scarf) or a shawl draped over one or both of the shoulders.
Wedding Sherwanis look stunningly regal and because they fuse the best of eastern and western styling they are the perfect attire for the wedding and also the reception. They are available in a staggering variety of colours with varying degrees of embroidery from minimal to absolutely gaudy - whatever suits your style of dressing!
Jodhpuri Suits
The Jodhpuri Suit is similar to the western suit, except that the jacket has a short collar, which is usually fastened at the neck and is worn with matching formal trousers. It can be worn with a shirt underneath in a matching or contrasting colour or even a round-necked close fitting top.
Many Jodhpuri suits come with waistcoats, which are carefully coordinated to complement the outfit and nowadays many men are sporting a short khes (traditional scarf) around the neck to liven up their outfit. Unlike their western counterpart, the Nehru suit, which is usually plain, Jodhpuri suits are designed using varying degrees of embroidery to add some ethnic pzazz and individuality to the suit.
Kurta Pyjamas
Kurta Pyjamas, or Salwar Kameez as they are known in North India and Pakistan, are long tunics of knee length worn over trousers in a matching or contrasting colour. They are typically complemented by a short sleeved or long sleeved over coat, which contrasts with the outfit or a khes (long scarf) in contrasting colours, draped over one or both the shoulders.
The trousers (pyjamas) come in a variety of styles. Most common is the churidar, a very tight trouser that is cut longer in length than required with excess cuffing at the bottom. The straight and parallel pyjamas stitched in a rich fabric also look very regal. A third and less common option is the dhoti, a very long piece of cloth, wound around and in between the legs. Fortunately, this now comes pre-stitched to facilitate easy wearing and prevent it coming off easily!
Size Matters
Lastly, no matter how good the outfit looks on a model in a magazine or on a mannequin in a shop, it doesn't guarantee that it will look as good on you. You need to make an honest assessment of your body shape and take this into account when choosing your outfit, to make sure that you show up on your big day in an outfit that makes you look your best.
