T-shirts have been part of fashion since the 1920s and their design and use has gone through a number of different transformations. Styles have ranged from tight to loose, long to cropped and everything in between. The range of colours and designs that have been used for t-shirts over the years is even more varied. In fashion today, there seem to be a few different trends that are currently the most popular. These include:

Geek T-shirts

With the increasing popularity of social media, ‘geek’ t-shirts printed with slogans or images based on computer terminology seem to appear ever more rapidly. Whether they contain an image of a Facebook ‘like’ icon or a clever merging of a number of different platforms, geek t-shirts can be a fun and ironic way to portray the impact that social media is having on so many aspects of our lives.

Pop Culture T-shirts

These usually have a movie or television theme or may reference any part of wider popular culture such as music. Pop culture t-shirts can be ironic, political, humorous or promotional in essence and may often be based on cult television shows, performing artists and movies such as The Hangover. When it comes to pop culture t-shirts, there are a dazzling array of niches, from Japanese animation to 1980s David Hasselhoff and much more.

Vintage Inspired T-shirts

Vintage inspired t-shirts have retro themes and typefaces and often feature older popular television shows and iconic historical figures. From punk style designs to Miss Piggy from the Muppet Show, vintage t-shirts generally appeal to all ages and have a wide-ranging customer base.

Slogan T-shirts

Slogan t-shirts can be used as political tools, to raise environmental or ethical awareness, or just to make people laugh and can feature anything from one word slogans to obscenities and well-crafted political satire. There are even slogan t-shirts for babies!

Custom Designed T-shirts

The internet and modern printing and graphics technologies mean that designing and printing your own t-shirt is becoming more and more popular. With access to the appropriate software and printing hardware, many people can be a t-shirt designer from the comfort of their own home. Customised designs are a great way to ensure people can buy an entirely unique t-shirt and as a bonus they may often be cheaper than mass-produced t-shirts.

Of course many t-shirt trends are not set in stone. It is not uncommon to see a vintage inspired design with a slogan, or a popular television figure alongside technical jargon. T-shirts are nothing if not versatile and one of the great things about t-shirts is that they can encompass many different styles and combinations to produce whatever result you are looking for.
