Even if you've been a parent for years already, there is always room to improve your skills. Every kid is different and the needs of each child changes as he or she gets older. That's why parents have to learn to keep up with their kids and always be ready to change their approach when necessary. Here are some of the most important parenting skills that will help you be the best parent you can be.
It is important to be consistent when you discipline your kids. This is not an easy quality for many parents to display, but if you lack it you can be sure your children will not take your directives very seriously. You should think carefully before setting up rules and consequences -don't make promises or threats that you don't intend to keep. For example, if you've taken away television privileges for your son for a week, don't give in a few days into the punishment. When you give in you tell your kids that your word isn't worth much and that it can safely be disregarded. Your kids are going to test you so it important to stay firm. One particular skill that you and your kids would do well to learn is time management. If you have problems with time management your kids probably will too. Children (and adults too, if we're being honest) find it very frustrating when they run out of time to complete something on which they are working like a homework assignment or even something more fun like playing a computer game. It's a good idea to try to teach at least basic time management skills to your kids as early as you possibly can. Because you are the parent and the schedule is usually in your hands, your first goal should be to become very skilled in time management yourself.
It is a challenge sometimes but you should work hard to stay calm. Even if you do not feel especially calm, resist the urge to take that anger out on your kid in an outburst. If you act out your anger, you are not going to be very effective and you'll send the wrong messages to your children. Even when discipline is called for, it needs to be carried out calmly and straightforwardly, not angrily. It's normal to feel things but when you feel that you are losing control, take a few deep breaths and do your best to take a break from the moment. More importantly, don't let yourself make any decisions about your actions until you've calmed down. Discipline should be based on rational principles, not emotions. As the parent, you want to be in control as much as possible.
These are some of the parenting skills that can help you build a successful relationship with your kids. Each parent faces unique challenges and these will be based on your personality and the personality of your kids. Try to remember that parenting is a process that changes a little bit each day as your child grows up but keeping some definite boundaries in place can be helpful both for you and your child.
These parenting techniques can be useful for you and for your children, nevertheless they will most likely not give good results if you have troubles in your marriage.
