For anyone interested in beginning a career in computer technology, A+ certification is a great place to start. The A+ certification by CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) is an entry-level certification specifically designed to test competency in basic IT support skills. This certification has been the bench-mark for professionals entering the industry, by which corporations measure technical and communication skills. Consequently, without this CompTIA credentials you may simply be ruled out of a job position regardless of your actual skills.

The current certificate requires applicants to pass two exams: CompTIA A+ Essentials and CompTIA A+ Practical Application. All certificate holders must renew their certifications by retesting every three years; this ensures that A+ qualified professionals stay current on their education and training. So what exactly do these two exams cover?

The CompTIA A+ Essentials test covers technical computer competency, networking and security knowledge, plus relevant communication skills that are required of a person with at least six-months of industry experience. One upside to this test is that all questions are in multiple choice format. However, there are several Microsoft Certified Training Partners available online for exam prep.

The CompTIA A+ Practical Application test builds on the skills and knowledge needed to pass the Essentials test. This exam is the hands-on, situational portion of the certification and requires problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

What job opportunities are there in the IT industry if you get your A+ certification? Many help desk positions, technical and IT support jobs, and field technician occupations may be available to A+ certified applicants. Many large companies make certification mandatory for entry-level IT job placement consideration. Among these companies are Microsoft, HP, Intel, Dell, and Cisco. If you are serious about becoming a computer technician, this certification is a must.

Unfortunately, these exams aren't always an accurate measure of one's knowledge. CompTIA Bootcamps and courses are a great option for individuals starting with little to no experience and seasoned professionals in computer technology. It doesn't hurt to prepare for what's on paper after all, what's on the exam may not be worded in a way that's practical for your understanding. Bootcamps allow students to learn and retain exam approved material. A+ courses are typically hands-on real world training scenarios based around CompTIA’s own training materials.

If you are someone who already has a knack for computer technology and experience in the field, a certification camp or bootcamp might be a better solution. Some of the best certification bootcamps can help you achieve certification with just a few long days of training with highly skilled instructors. While they are quicker than a traditional class, accelerated programs like these teach the same curriculum and can be just as effective. If this option sounds appealing, be sure to look for camps with CompTIA certified instructors and small class sizes.

A+ Certification really is a stepping stone to a thriving career in computer technology. Whether you are interested in becoming a computer technician or continuing with higher education and career advancement, A+ will help you pave the way.
