How Can I Protect My Home From Fire?

House fires are one of the most common causes of property loss and homelessness in many parts of the world. Although easily prevented and readily remedied, left unchecked, it can cause devastating damage to both property and people alike - costing homeowners thousands of pounds in damage costs and repairs. However, keeping one's home safe from the possibility of fire only takes a few simple steps.
The most common cause of fires is unknown gas leaks. To prevent the catastrophic results that come about with gas-leak fires, always be sure that the gas is turned off when not in use. Keeping a fire extinguisher ready in several areas of the home can remedy small fires before they become larger conflagrations. Keeping furniture away from direct heat sources, such as heaters and radiators, is yet another small, but useful way in keeping households safe from the possibility of fire.
If candles or incense are a major part of one's aesthetic preferences or religious beliefs, providing an adequate and safe place to light such materials away from items that may catch fire drastically reduces the risk of house fires. Keeping flammable liquids in a secure location away from heat and barest hint of flame is yet another way of keeping one's home safe from potential fires.
Electrical equipment as well as all household wiring has to undergo a routine maintenance check-up every other month or so to ensure that no faulty wires, breakers, fuses, or any other electrical component will pose a risk. Lastly, because most fires are inextinguishable by mere water alone, always keeping a few fire extinguishers on hand in major parts of the house (such as the kitchen and the bedroom) will ensure that fires can readily be controlled, if ever such a need comes.
Learning the proper usage of a fire extinguisher, as well as its varying types is a must for every family member. If your budget is not much of an issue, installing smoke alarms and fire-detectors will provide even greater security.
In a worst-case scenario, having a ready escape plan and the number of the local fire department on hand can be a lifesaver. Devising an escape route and conducting emergency drills with the family will make escape (if and when it is needed) easier and less confusing.
When opting to install additional fire security measures, having it installed in areas more prone to fires, such as the kitchen and the living room are a must. Protecting a home from fire is always a better option than having to go through escape measures, but to go about it efficiently, one must give ample time, planning, awareness, and exercise constant vigilance to keep their homes and family safe from the debilitating risk of fire.
