As you begin the design process of your yearbook, you will likely decide to save money and add some dynamics to the pages with a combination of color and black and white pages. Making the most out of each page is essential. Just as essential is to highlight the right events and people, while saving money on the others that have slightly less significance to the story of the year. With this in mind, it can be difficult to determine what should be highlighted and what should be kept in greyscale instead of color.
Here is a quick guide to help you as you plan your next yearbook.
Color Pages
• Senior class photos
This is the last year the students of the senior class will have their photo in a yearbook, and therefore, they should be highlighted, congratulated and honored for their accomplishments. Some producers also choose to add a little extra personal touch by including a small sentiment under each color photo written by the student.
• Team photos
The major sports teams or any team that accomplished something extra important throughout the year should have their pictures in color. This will help reward them for their hard work and let them know the school is proud of their extracurricular activities.
• Event photos
Homecoming, prom and other events are ones where students dress to the nines and have their hair and makeup styled just perfectly. For this reason, these events should hold special meaning in the yearbook and photos should highlight the same amount of effort put in by the students.
Black and White Pages
• Lower classmen photos
All students at the school are important, but lower classmen photos are typically in black and white to help save money, space and to help highlight the seniors who are graduating.
• Autograph pages
Many students like to use fun colors to sign their friends and classmates’ pages. Let their ink standout instead of the page itself by always keeping the autograph pages in black and white.
• Around campus photos
Many memory books are filled with miscellaneous photos from around campus taken during lunch hour, recess or other down times where students can be candid. While these are great photos to add, they do not need to be highlighted in any way.
Companies, such as the Memory Book Company, offer tutorials and additional guidance through an automated online solution that will help you get the most out of your creation.
