When Is It Worth an Extension For an Indoor Swimming Pool?

Most people would agree that an indoor swimming pool is a great thing to have. You can use it for exercise, entertaining family and friends or just plain relaxation. Yet what should you do if you find that your indoor pool has become too small to meet your needs? The obvious solution is to build an extension, but is that a practical solution? Here are some things that those with indoor swimming pools should think about when considering adding an extension:
The Design
What will the pool and the area surrounding it look like if extended? The key is the size of the structure in which the pool is already located. First you must determine whether it is big enough to house an extension and what it will look like when completed. Will there be enough room for other things you value in your pool environment, like room to lounge or dance at parties? Perhaps not just the pool but the structure in which it is held needs to be extended as well.
Costs
Even if a pool extension makes sense from a design standpoint, you must also bear in mind the potential costs. Consult with several pool construction contractors before deciding on which one to hire so that you get a good overall view of what the right price should be. Much will depend on whether you want to include extras such as a gym or spa or if you are seeking a unique design. Remember also that there may be wiring and plumbing issues created by the pool extension.
Maintenance
The costs of a pool extension do not end with the completion of construction. Now the pool has to be maintained, and since the pool is now larger your maintenance costs will increase as well. Some of these increased costs can be lowered by better energy efficiencies such as use of solar heating. Also lighting can affect expenses, so use energy saving bulbs and consider installing new windows in the walls and ceiling where it will allow natural heat and light to enter.
In the end only you know what you want. Indoor swimming pools perform many roles in a person's life, depending upon the owner's income, the size of the structure in which the pool is housed and how many people will be using it. Therefore whether you need an extension, how much it should cost and whether you will be able to maintain it in good working condition should be the primary factors you consider when planning an extension for your indoor swimming pool. With a little foresight and commonsense you should be able to successfully determine whether a swimming pool extension makes sense for you.
