It doesn't take a lot to impress a date in Amsterdam; the setting itself is just so romantic with tree-lined canals, charming old buildings and pretty cycling locals. If you can afford to splurge on a trip for two to the charming Dutch capital, do it.
Things to Do
One of the most pleasant ways of enjoying Amsterdam is by aimlessly cycling along, stopping off anywhere that seems interesting and worth exploring. Bring along a picnic basket full of local goodies such as Dutch cheese (gouda, edam, leerdammer, leyden or others), ginger cake, pastries, seafood and a few bottles of refreshing beer or a non-alcoholic beverage, and get cosy in one of the city's many parks: Vondelpark, Beatrixpark, Amsterdamse Bos, Sarphatipark, Amstelpark or others. Alternatively, buy your lunch at one of the city's vibrant neighbourhood markets: Cuypmarkt or Noordermarkt – Boerenmarkt. Here you'll find a lovely selection of warm continental favourites as well, such as waffles and crepes.
If you're looking for a cultural activity of some sort, head to one of Amsterdam's many museums or art galleries. Art lovers will really appreciate visits to the famous Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, and history buffs will adore Anne Frank's House. But for a little something different, check out the photography exhibitions at Foam Editions, the contemporary art at Akinci, and Partout Posters gallery.
For a romantic end to the day, splurge on a canal boat cruise. Either book a boat for two or a table on one of the boats on board which it's possible to dine.
Dining
Thanks to its international history, the Netherlands is home to citizens of very varied backgrounds, and the cuisine reflects this greatly. In Amsterdam, you can indulge in cuisine from the Carribean, Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Some of the best areas to head to for hearty fare are Jordaan, Spui, the Pijp, and Leidseplein.
For real Dutch food, you may wish to visit Claes Claesz restaurant, Damsteeg, or Restaurant Greetje. Show off with your local knowledge and order a stamppot. This is a local potato-based dish that comes in many varieties with meat, fish or veggie extrass. Alternatively, look into the 'Dine with the Dutch' project that sees local families invite foreign visitors into their homes for a traditional meal.
Accommodation
A city hotel Amsterdam should be within walking or cycling distance of most main attractions.
To impress your date, make sure there is an in-house bar for you to enjoy cocktails upon arrival, and that a hearty breakfast is served to get you energised for a day in the city.
Request a room with a view and fall asleep admiring the beautiful silhouettes dotting the Amsterdam skyline, and wake up to the morning sounds of the Dutch capital.
