Planning a trip to the British Isles? Discover some of the UK's best destinations for young people in terms of nightlife, daytime entertainment opportunities and general atmosphere.
Glasgow
Scotland's biggest city is one for arty young people and those looking to enjoy some of the best nightlife the UK can offer. With three universities and various colleges in town, Glasgow certainly caters well towards its younger visitors.
A lot of the nightlife is located on the very central Sauchiehall Street and nearby Bath Street. The area's bars and clubs are mainly geared towards students and offer very cheap deals, particularly during the week.
For a little something alternative, visit venues such as Stereo, Mono, The 13th Note and The Arches in the city centre. Alternatively, head to the West End where the Glasgow University cool kids hang out at places like The 78, Hillhead Book Club and Queen Margaret Union.
Those seeking daytime entertainment will be pleased to hear Glasgow is arguably Scotland's best destination for shopping with a mix of high street shops, vintage boutiques and charity shops to browse. There are also many museums and art centres worth discovering, such as the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art, the CCA, Kelvingrove, and the Burrell Collection.
Other attractions include Xscape for indoor skiing and snowboarding, powerboat rides along the river Clyde, and tours of the Necropolis.
Bristol
The city of Bristol gained a lot of attention and popularity thanks to hit TV show, Skins. But it's certainly not as rough as it's depicted! The home of graffiti artist Banksy is a vibrant destination with an up and coming art and nightlife scene.
Areas of interest to young people include Montpellier and the Gloucester Road area where you'll find cafes, bars and unique shops. Many businesses advertise themselves as "green" so menus are likely to feature vegetarian and vegan dishes.
The old Tobacco Factory now functions as an arts centre with shows, exhibitions and occasional club nights too so it's well worth checking out the programme.
Attractions worth visiting during the day include M Shed museum, Bristol Zoo, and Clifton Suspension Bridge.
London
The capital is a great choice for short or long breaks alone or with a bunch of friends. One of the best ways to spend time in the city is by discovering its many vibrant markets. These offer a variety of goods from food to handmade clothing to cleaning products. Camden Market is particularly popular, and gets very busy during weekends. Towards the end of the day street food vendors reduce their prices so you can get a bargain meal. Other markets worth discovering are the posh Borough Market for food, and Portobello Market for quirky one-off items, art and clothing.
For good nightlife, head to the Shoreditch area near Old Street underground station, as well as Dalston. These are considered the trendiest new areas in town.
During the day, there are plenty of attractions on offer for young people such as London's wonderful parks where you can rent bicycles. Visit Richmond and Battersea Parks, and Greenwich.
If you check into a hotel in London Westminster, you'll be close to all the action.
