Sometimes all we need to put us in a cheerful Christmas mood is to visit the right place. These are special destinations known for their decorations, markets and seasonal spectacles, loved by both locals and foreign visitors. Why not visit one this year?

Cologne, Germany

Where better to go to experience a real German Christmas market than its homeland? Visit Cologne for an authentic experience of bratwurst, mulled wine, hot toddies, strudel and many other treats. Invest in lovely gift items such as handmade tree decorations, star-shaped lanterns, candles and more.

Visitors to Cologne have a total of six markets to choose from with one of the most famous ones located outside Cologne Cathedral. Here you can also admire the highest Christmas tree in Rhineland!

As a souvenir, purchase a special mug from which to enjoy your hot seasonal beverages. These are designed specially for every year and every market.

Entertainment includes performances by local choirs and dance groups, as well as puppet shows, visits to Santa's grotto and more.

Brussels, Belgium

A white Christmas isn't guaranteed in Belgium but in no way does its lack negatively affect the overall atmosphere in Brussels in the run up to one of the year's biggest festivities. The European capital becomes a true winter wonderland with light shows, seasonal pop up markets and divine smells wafting through the city's quaint streets from the mulled wine and other seasonal treat stalls to add to the existing blend of waffle and french fry aromas!

At the heart of all the action lies Place Sainte Catherine, easily reached on foot from the city centre, or by metro. Here you'll find the biggest seasonal market complete with an ice rink and a towering ferris wheel.

Another festive must is to experience the themed sound and light show on Grand Place, the city's central square. Every year, crowds flock there in the hours of darkness from afternoon onwards to see the delightful show from start to finish at least once.

London, United Kingdom

In the British capital, Winter Wonderland is set in the very central Hyde Park. Here kids and adults alike can try their luck at ice skating, admire intricate ice sculptures, or go on some rides. Of course, Santa has also been known to make an appearance. Yet to buy your Christmas gifts? Fortunately, there is a well-stocked market on site, and after all that shopping you'll be happy to visit some of the food stalls, many of which are German-themed and serve delicacies such as strudel and bratwurst.

When in town, it's also worth paying a visit to the towering pine tree that takes centre stage on Trafalgar Square every year. Nearby Covent Garden is also a feast for the eyes with all its seasonal décor.

To be within walking distance of some of the city's best Christmas offerings, stay at a hotel in London Westminster.
