Does your refrigerator keep you awake when it makes weird noises? There are a few things that can be done to quiet a refrigerator that is making noise. It is better to follow the tips of your technician: Find out about the origin of the noise, whether it is from the freezer or from behind the fridge. Figuring out the general location of the noise, will help determine the cause of it.
Troubleshoot - There are only so many parts of a fridge that produce noise. Once you have narrowed down the general location of the sound, you can begin troubleshooting various components to try to resolve the issue. While some issues can easily be fixed with minimal effort, others will require that you call in a professional who is trained in refrigeration repair.
Noise Inside the Freezer: Noise originating inside the freezer can typically be attributed to the evaporator fan, which runs whenever the unit is actively cooling. If you notice a chirping, squealing, or groaning sound that comes and goes, it may be an issue with the fan motor. To be certain, open the door to the freezer and push in any light/fan switch you see. If the sound gets louder with the door open, you can be pretty sure that the fan is the cause. Unfortunately, evaporator fans cannot be repaired, and must be replaced.
Noise from the Back of the Refrigerator: Most noises that you notice will come from the back of the refrigerator, where most of the moving parts are located. If you have a self-defrosting unit, the first place you will want to check is the condenser fan. You can find the condenser fan at the rear of the refrigerator, usually in back of a slim panel. There is sometimes an accumulation of lint and dirt in the fan that can cause a sound like a buzz or a click. You can attempt to fix the issue by taking off the thin cover to get to the fan, and clean it of any debris with a soft bristled brush. Replace the cover and plug the fridge back in once the fan is void of dust and other debris. If even after cleaning it, there is still noise being produced, it might be time to replace the part with the aid of an appliance repair company.
The compressor could be the problem if you are hearing rumbling and purring sounds from the rear of the refrigerator. The compressor is found in a football-sized case at the back of the fridge, towards the unit's bottom, more often than not containing either black or copper tubes with colored wires. The compressor can't often be replaced as a DIY job, since it's usually a sealed unit. If you are able to isolate the problem to the compressor, you will need to contact a refrigerator repair technician to complete the job.
Noise from the Bottom of the Refrigerator: If you have noise emanating from the bottom of your refrigerator, it is likely coming from one of two places. The first, and easiest to resolve, is rattling from a loose drain pan. To repair this, just tape the pan to its spot securely so the noise stops. If that doesn't work, you may have an issue with the defrost timer. Right behind the kickplate, in front of the unit, is the location of the defrost timer. It is not possible to repair this part and it is just a heating device placed on the evaporator coil. You may face the problem of accumulation of frost in your fridge or freezer if you have a problem with the defrost timer. Installation of this refrigerator repair component should be performed by an experienced technician.
Contact your local appliance repair service provider when: If you complete the above steps and still can't determine where the problem is coming from, or if you need to replace a complicated part such as the compressor or defrost timer, you should contact your local appliance repair service. In addition to providing you with thorough troubleshooting and safe, reliable repairs, most refrigerator repair technicians also offer routine maintenance, which can help you avoid problems down the road. With their help, you'll be able to sleep soundly without being interrupted by strange kitchen noises well into the future.
