Albany

Albany, found in the great southern region of WA, is the oldest colonial settlement in the state. The city was founded on 26th December 1826, over two years before Perth and Fremantle. Originally named Frederick Town, and then renamed in 1831 when it was transferred into the control of the Swan River Colony. The town has had a diverse history, serving as a major port, and then becoming a centre for agriculture, timber and whaling. There is a highly interesting whaling centre which explores the history of this industry and its links with the town. The town also played a part in the story of the ANZACs, as the port of departure for troops departing for the First World War.
