If you’ve invested money in a ducted air conditioner, you will already understand the dramatic effect that it can have on your indoor comfort. However, some people report that they have excessive dust related issues that are related to their AC systems. If this sounds like a problem that you’ve experienced personally read on and we will take a look at some solutions.
The Importance of Cleanliness
We all like to have a clean home so that we can share our comfortable homes with family and visiting friends. However, there are more good reasons why you may want to have a home that is clean and free from dust. It’s well known that dust can have a dramatic effect on people will allergies and breathing related conditions. Also, this may seem strange, but dust deposits can even affect our ability to lose weight effectively. Finally, a dusty home is simply harder to clean, and you will be happy to know that your AC system can even help you if you treat it right.
Investigating the Causes of Dust
When you check to see if the HVAC system is contributing to your dust related problems, it’s a good idea to start with the air filter. The HVAC filters in your system should be replaced or cleaned at least monthly to work efficiently. It may even be necessary to carry out this task more often if you have pets that shed a lot of hair.
If the filter is covered with a thick layer of dust, it will be clogged up, and it cannot work efficiently. The dust that you can see has been sucked out of your home by your AC system, but as it becomes more clogged, it’s less able to remove the dust from the air. In fact, the AC system could even be distributing dust throughout the home via the ductwork and registers.
There are different filters available that are more or less effective to use in your home. If you continue to experience problems, it could be a good idea to switch to a more effective filter. A filter that has a higher MERV rating may be able to trap smaller particles, but there is a tradeoff, a more efficient filer will be far more expensive, and it will also affect the energy efficiency.
When you change the air filter, check around the seal to make sure that it’s airtight. The air filter should be the correct size for your system, and it should be clean and dry before it’s replaced. If air can escape around the air filter it’s effectively useless; dust will be sucked in and distributed throughout the home.
