Have you ever had trouble finding the right furniture that works for a smaller house like a mobile home or small cabin because it always looked cluttered and messy? With less square footage, it can be really difficult to properly furnish this type of home. In this article, I will give you some helpful tips for choosing the right furniture for a small space.
Some factors to consider when furnishing a smaller space are: the dimensions and shape of the room, the amount of people living in the home, and if your current furniture is working for you. With a smaller space, you have to make the best use of every inch of the home and there are several ways you can do that.
The first thing that should be done is to consider the actual size and scale of the furniture you presently have. Is it big and bulky? Do you have a large sectional couch that you keep around, even though it takes up your whole living room? Or do you have a huge coffee table, when you really just need a small one? Or maybe your king size bed is taking up the whole bedroom and you can downsize to a queen. If any of these situations apply to you, then you might want to sell these larger items, or give them to someone who needs them, so you can go buy some smaller furniture. There are a lot of smaller sized furniture options on today's market. It’s best to buy these items in person, so you can see if they are really small enough for your space. But if you have to order online, look at their dimensions and see if it they would be a good fit.
Another thing to consider when furnishing a smaller space is the actual dimensions of a room. With that information, you can begin to choose the right sized pieces for the room. Since it’s a smaller space, it’s best to start with the largest furniture first, such as the couch or bed because they take up the most room and are necessary items. Then you can begin to choose other items to fill the room with, such as tables and chairs.
I find it helpful to actually draw out the floor plan of the room, and lay out the furniture to see where it fits best, but not everyone likes to draw. You could even cut out shapes of your furniture and move them around the drawing to see where you want everything. Another way to see what works best is to simply keep moving the furniture around the room to see where it works best, starting with the main furniture like the couch etc. Usually there’s only one or two good places for that to go. The other item that is somewhat hard to place is the TV, since the cable line is usually already inside the wall.
Something that you should keep in mind when trying to furnish a small space, is how many people are living in the home. If it’s just 2 people, then you really only need a couple places to sit. With less furniture taking up space, it will make a small room feel more open and spacious feeling. If you have company over often, you will need adequate seating for them..
After that, you should consider the placement of the furniture. The largest wall should be where the largest piece of furniture goes. If a wall has a window, that’s usually a bad spot to put a couch or bed. If you have a wall with a doorway or walkway, that is a decent place for a small table.
Another valuable tip, and often overlooked, is the use of furniture that doubles as storage. Like an ottoman that is also a storage box, or a bed that has drawers underneath. Or a hide-a-bed inside of a couch. There are many furniture options that serve multiple purposes available on the market today, and they can help you make the best use of your limited space.
One final tip for decorating a small space: Less is More. Try to have the least number of items as possible in your space, but still have function. If the item doesn't serve a purpose (or two), get rid of it. Your home will feel less cluttered and more inviting. I hope this article gave you some useful tips for furnishing a small space. Thank you for checking it out!
