Duvet covers come in many types of fabrics from simple cotton to bamboo, hemp, and even silk. Although we are all familiar with cotton products, a lot of us are confused about some of the other fabrics. This article will give you an explanation of what I consider to be the 8 best fabrics for duvet covers. Some are man-made and some are natural or organic.
Cotton/Organic Cotton:
When we talk about cotton, we are usually quite familiar with cotton clothing and how soft it can feel to the skin. This is the same reason that cotton duvet covers are very popular. They are soft and warm and can make your bed feel like a great little nest. Cotton is also very durable and long-lasting. More and more, we are hearing about organic vs regular cotton products so here is a quick explanation of the difference between the two types; organic cotton is produced from a cotton plant that is free of chemicals, fertilizers, insecticides and any other man-made chemicals that are sometimes used on farms. Organic cotton farmers work with nature and put a lot of effort into causing no environmental harm. Regular cotton is produced from plants that have been treated with everyday products that ensure the growth and safety of the plant and then washed by the farmers or manufacturers to rid the plants of any kind of chemicals before using them in their products. Whether you are using regular cotton duvet covers or organic cotton, you can easily wash and dry them at home.
Microfiber:
Microfiber is a man-made product where the fibers are extremely thin. This produces a strong fabric with a very soft feel that is durable and long-lasting. The fabric woven from microfiber is also light and breathable and can reduce the effects of allergens in bedding. One of the best things about microfiber is that it can be made to feel like other types of fabrics such as silk or cotton, at a much lower cost! Microfiber is easily washed and dried at home.
Linen:
Linen is a fabric that is made from the flax plant. It is so durable that products made from linen can actually be passed from generation to generation. Linen is a smooth and soft fabric which feels cool to the skin so it would be a great idea for the summer for your duvet covers. Linen is easily washed at home.
Flannel:
Flannel is a fabric that is made out of loosely knitting natural or synthetic fibers. It has a wonderful warm and soft feel that invites you to snuggle in your bed on a cold winter day. While being soft and lightweight, it is extremely durable and can take a lot of wear and tear, as well as being thrown in the washer and dryer over and over. Perfect for cold weather!
Bamboo:
Fabrics made from the bamboo plant have a natural anti-bacterial element and therefore are excellent for anyone who wants to make sure that they are as protected from bacteria as possible when they are sleeping (especially if you are sleeping with dogs or cats on your bed as a lot of us are!).
Bamboo is also naturally free of odor and dries quickly which keeps it fresher much longer. It has an insulating factor that helps keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It has a soft and silky feel and is quite durable. A lot of people think that bamboo is hard to clean but it can be thrown in the washer and dryer just like other fabrics and usually the drying time is less than most other fabrics.
Silk:
Silk is a luxurious fiber that is created from the strands produced by the silkworm. The fabric is very strong and smooth and is often used by people who have allergies. Although silk requires extra care or dry-cleaning, many people think that the sophisticated look provided by a silk duvet cover is worth the extra work.
Hemp:
Hemp fabric is made from the hemp plant which is very sustainable and environmentally friendly. Hemp is not quite as soft as most of the other fabrics used in duvet covers, but it is still a comfortable bedding material. Many people use it because of its natural qualities that are good for the environment.
When buying a duvet cover, the fabric you choose should be the best that works for you based on your lifestyle, climate, and comfort needs. I hope these descriptions of the different fabrics will make that choice easier for you.
