The Mini in 2025: A Practical Acquisition Checklist

If you are eyeing a used Mini today, ignore the marketing fluff; run this four-point checklist instead:

A. Sensor Hour vs Project Length

Under 1 500 h = still inside first service cycle.

1 500-2 200 h = budget $950 for ARRI sensor cert (add $0.65 per rental day).

B. Licence Bundle

4:3 anamorphic licence adds +$650 resale value; ask for the PDF certificate.

C. Back-Focus Date-Stamp

Demand the last C-clip shim readout; anything > ±10 µm means a $180 re-shim is due.

D. Thermal Threshold Log

Request last 100 h of internal temp logs (service centre can email).

If max temp > 68 °C on more than 5 % of clips, CFast socket may need $220 replacement.

The Alexa Mini is not nostalgia; it is a deliberately under-spec’d, over-built tool whose entire cost-structure is already amortised by the rental market.

Producers continue to book it because it reduces lighting spend, insurance spend, and post-storage spend while guaranteeing delivery compliance.

In short, the fan you hear on set is the sound of risk being removed from the budget—one decibel at a time.
