Accurate measurement is very important in the current era of science, technology and industry. If accurate data is not available in every research, test or production process, mistakes can be made in decision-making, which can cause losses. That is why the process called “calibration” plays such an important role. It ensures that the equipment is working reliably and the standards according to which the tests are being conducted are being followed correctly.
Regular calibration can eliminate errors or inaccurate readings in the equipment. Especially in the case of test and measurement equipment, such as multimeters, thermometers, pressure gauges, etc., if there is no calibration, the test results may be incorrect and the impact of that error can affect the entire production process.
What is calibration?
Calibration is a process where the measurements or readings of an instrument are compared with a reliable standard reference to see if the instrument is working correctly. Simply put, it is a type of verification that ensures the accuracy and precision of the instrument.
Simply put: Calibration is the “process of verifying the accuracy of measurements”.
Example: A thermometer is compared with a standard thermometer to see if it is showing the correct temperature.
This is usually done in a specialized laboratory or accredited calibration center, where the testing environment is ensured according to international standards.
Why is calibration necessary?
The accuracy of equipment decreases over time, this is a natural process. Temperature, humidity, dust, vibration, and long-term use cause changes in the sensors or mechanisms inside the device. As a result, the device gradually starts giving incorrect measurements.
Ensuring accurate measurements: Regular calibration can restore the device to its accuracy.
Safety: If a product is damaged due to incorrect measurements or if the test results are incorrect, accidents can occur.
Therefore, calibration is not just a technical process; it is an important part of safety, quality control and reliability.
Which instruments require calibration
Most industries, laboratories and engineering institutions use various types of test and measurement equipment, the calibration of which is very necessary.
Electrical devices: Multimeters, oscilloscopes, voltmeters, ampere meters, etc. require regular calibration to measure accurate voltage and current.
Mechanical instruments: Calibration is essential to maintain the accuracy of instruments such as pressure gauges, torque wrenches, weight scales, dial indicators, etc.
Environmental instruments: Thermometers, humidity sensors, flow meters, etc. are also calibrated to obtain accurate environmental data.
If these instruments are not calibrated correctly, the results of the research, the quality of the product and the safety of the instrument can be compromised.
What is the calibration process?
Calibration is usually completed in several steps, which depend on the type of instrument and the standard.
Step 1: Preparation – The instrument is cleaned and placed in the right environment.
Step 2: Comparison with the standard – The output or reading of the instrument is compared with a reference instrument according to international standards.
Step 3: Data analysis – The difference (error) between the instrument reading and the standard is measured.
Step 4: Adjustment and certification – If necessary, the instrument is adjusted and a calibration certificate is issued.
This certificate proves that the instrument is accurately calibrated and suitable for standard use.
