This article describes the most common Acer Laptop Problems. If you're thinking of buying Acer laptop computers in the US or UL, then I suggest you to read about the main Acer laptop problems before you buy.

There is an alarmingly large number of problems being described by Acer owners on different blogs and forums over the Internet. Some owners' Acer laptops have gone completely unusable, with signs of power or mother board failure. The machine will now not even turn on and if the warranty has passed, you will be facing some major issues. Acer has been notoriously difficult in communicating such problems with clients, the customer support is not very helpful and they don't reimburse too often. If you do a little research online, you will see a lot of people complaining about problems with Acer Aspire. Acer laptops are not cheap and should definitely provide far better quality for that money.

Another common Acer laptop problem is "getting the blackscreen." It appears that the LCD displays have the backlight (usually a cold cathode) burnt out. The repair typically consists of opening the monitor replacing the cold cathode tube and reassembling the unit. But before you go on to such decisions, make sure to check that you haven't just accidentally turn off the backlight. On Acer laptops, pressing the Fn button and F6 at the same time is the backlight on/off togle. Holding the Fn button and pressing the left/right arrow keys raises/lowers the backlight brightness. Another commonly reported problem about Acer laptops is USB port failure. Some owners have complained about the USB ports not working. Even after reinstalling the drivers, they still don't work.

There are cases when an Acer laptop would develop a fault with the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) where windows could not find the disc. The only fix here is getting a new hard drive and this would cost you around $200 if the warranty period is over. You should definitely report that problem and send the machine for repair. Acer would charge you more, but this a repair that even you can do by yourself should you be knowledgeable enough of course. Another problem is what's known as "the click of death." It can happen on a brand new model if the hard drive is making lots of clicking noises, which is a sign that the disc is not keeping the correct speed.

A problem was recently discovered in the charging process of Acer Travelmate 2702WLMi laptop. When powered down, the charging only works intermittently. The charge light comes on but then randomly blinks on and then off etc. The result is that it takes forever to charge. This is a common Acer laptop problem that has got something to do with overheating. One of the fans can all of sudden stop working and as a result, overheating occurs. Make sure your laptop is not getting really hot. Another thing you can do is open it up and clear up the dust that's covering everything. Just remove the dust and it will work much better, because clogged-up heatsinks can affect the battery charging.

Some Acer owners have reported that the DVD burner has suddenly stopped working after the warranty period ended. The DVD-RW drive stopped burning to Disc and barely plays any dvds. This would normally happen if you have recorded a very big number of DVDs like a thousand, but shouldn't occur in other circumstances.

If your Acer laptop freezes, seek official Acer laptop support. In case suddenly your Acer laptop shuts down, check the Acer laptop troubleshooting manual.

Dont worry guys. Your laptops are in very good condition comparing mine. I bought yesterday an acer aspire R date 04/21/16 and the next day morning my screen is b)ack all day. Not even a day purchase.

My laptop started out the mouse would not work right. Then when I would type it would not type the words so I would have to retype them. My screen takes for ever to come up and does not boot up. These Acers are crap. I think a class action lawsuit is what is needed. After reading all these problems and no tech support this is BS They don't stand behind their product it's obvious!! My laptop is not even a year old.....let's get together and sue!!!

Ai ai Acer... 1) Overheating: definately a bad ventilation configuration. Open laptop. Clean with vacuum cleaner and the fan itself with earsticks and window cleaner. If there is a soft cotton like filter between the fan and the fan exit. Remove it. This dust filter thing is the main reason for overheating on some Acer laps (e.g. the older Acer Aspire 5100). 2) Keyboard/Touchpad not loading: definately the notorious conflicting battery on Acers (and e.g. Packard Bells). In most cases the only way to make keyboard + touchpad + external usb devices work all at once is to remove the battery. Alas!

I've loved my Acer. At one point a couple keys stopped working, but the laptop slipped out of my hands and landed on the carpet and the keys began working again !! The problem I'm having now is that it will be plugged in, but the screen intensity will drop and the lower display bar will indicate it's not charging. If I unplug and re-plug, that usually fixes it. I got it for a good price and have used it many hours everyday for about 4 years, so if I have to get a new one I really can't complain.

Acer manufacturing problems extend far past its computers and encompasses a myriad of its products. Beware from which manufacturer u purchase electronics product from. I only write this review to help you make an informed decision. I owned an acer tablet which ran on android and after charging it, it stopped booting up and would not work altogether. This happened at the 14 month period after I purchased it. Many others have had the same thing happened to them. Simply type into your browser 'Acer tablet problems' and see for yourself. There's got to be some inferior manufacturing flaw or product part deficiency from Acer's manufacturer plant or supplier that has caused these many product from malfunctioning just after the warranty has expired, so my best advice to anybody who would purchase Acer products is to at least get extra warranty coverage for at least one more year past the manufacturer's warranty, but why bother with additional cost and trouble, personally I would stay away from purchasing any Acer product altogether due to the uncertainty of quality control and manufacturing deficiency. It's a shame that after spending hundred of dollars on a product it would just quit working. The SNID of the product in question I own and which no longer works is 20508373615.

Just got my @#$! Acer 5745 back from its second repair, Acer claims they can't anything wrong with it, I expect to have the usual problem the very next time I turn the computer on (it freezes, won't boot up, and takes about three goes and up to ten minutes before it finally boots up). The warranty runs out on Friday. I don't think they'll care about the fact that they've had it or its been in transit for most of the last month. I HATE ACER and I will NEVER buy one again. I too have an expensive DVD player - at least as long as I can turn it on.

I have an Acer 4810-T about two years old. Generally very good and exceptional batery life. My problem is that the Power Saving utility keeps shutting off my DVD player causing it to not show up as a D:/Drive and of course it will not allow the tray tto open. This a sporadic thing, sometimes it works and sometimes it won't. I have changed power settings to not consere and still wiull not work. Acer wants $$$ to fix a program related to their scsrew up.

I bought an Acer Aspire 7736Z March of 2010. Took me some time to save up for this! The live mail has never let me set up due to "someone else already is on the account" thus the hard drive is "used"! 2 days after purchase I contacted Acer, for $160's they could fix this problem. The Microsoft Office wouldn't accept the key & while all under warranty they wanted to charge me over $200's to fix it!! Every time I've contacted Acer, which is a pain, they of course want to charge me & after I state my complaint..I have a new problem!! The cd/dvd won't open by the push button so must locate eject command(not easy to locate). When I've written a document & load it onto another computer so I can print it, guess what...it turns every bit into bizzare symbols & letters. Of course Acer can fix this office problem by paying $150's +additional costs, for something that was "already to be added onto the pc at time of purchase". Acer doesn't care, they know they can make big $$$ just on ppl buying them & then to make more $$$ they force ownders into repairs that will eventually add up to the cost of several "brand new" pcs! The time "constantly" changes & if you'll watch..generally something stops working correctly. They can access your pc by satellite, guess what they are doing to us! USB ports..well having same problems as others are. I must say I don't have all those other issues, but the issues I have are big problems & take $$$ to fix. I'm on a fixed income, so my pc is almost as disabled as I am. I wonder if there is gov't funding for new disabled pc's??!!

Well, yeah I have notices that the curser moves sometimes into a sentence and you end up typeing into something else. I bought this laptop Apr 14th 2010 for my birthday, I was tired of family hand me down's. But what has me sick is that I was working on a Story Novel, went to get a drink and when I came back my laptop was shut off. I unplugged it from the Surge protected power strip, unpluged that from the Surge protecter outlet in my wall. Took out the battery out of the back of my laptop and unpluged the power cord to the laptop. I waited about a minute then pluged it all back together and placed the battery back in. The power light came on, screen was ok, went back to writing my novel... And then tink.... yeah TINK, the Laptop shut off.... TOTALLY OFF. I called the ACER number on the box the laptop came in, They informed me since my laptop stoped working on April 15th 2011 THIS year it was past the warrenty and they could not help me!!!! I spent my money on somthing I cherrish, and it wasn't cheap! Only to have my life ripped apart.

I unfortunately bought the Acer Aspire 7714Z model. Let me say it's a $500 DVD player. The rest of the laptop is completely crap. Screen resolution changes up and down on me at random. Also when I'm online either sending emails or trying to order something I constantly get bounced out of the page I'm on back to the prior one. Cursor is all over the place when trying to type. Trying to get it resoved with Acer support is well like dealing with a child at best. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with their customer support this morning trying to get a straigh answer out of them before I finally said enough is enough. Give me a damn tracking number so I can send this piece of sh** back to you while it's under warranty. I guess it's going to be gone about 6 weeks from what he told me. I think everyone should get together and do a clash action lawsuit on Acer. This is terrible and I would never buy another product from them. Very frustrated.

ACER Aspire 6930 is now over two years old and still humming along. Since I installed Windows 7 (in English)' I have had no problems. My only real problem was VISTA pre-installed in French and Acer would not do anything. Good LapTop, so far. But,customer service=0. At the price they sell these Laptops, the customer service should be there.

I have a Acer Aspire 7720 and reading this blog about the charging issues has given me an insight to my issue. The laptop only seems to charge when it is sat in cold conservatory. Anywhere else all I get is orange flashing power button. being an IT engineer I have had the laptop in parts many times and everything seems to be ok. Not wanting to pay out for a new mainboard, I am wondering if the comment about overheating causes charging issues might be relevant here. I can see many charging comments and I think maybe the next thing I'll be doing is applying new heatsync cement on the processor and also might replace the fan, as I cant hear that. Once I've done that I'll let you all know if it has curred the issue. Lastly the power pack is the 4amp one, and not the 3amp which will cause an issue - so check these details as well.

My daughter saved her hard-earned money and bought a very pricey Acer laptop. Within 3 months this laptop made a loud, cracking sound and a crack appeared across the screen. Not long after, another crack . . . screen useless, Acer wants $320 for us to send it back because The Good Guys claim that, as there's two sets of "impact points" (where the cracks appeared, from one end to the other end of the crack), they believe this was caused by the owner. This laptop was loved by my daughter who was extremely careful about so much as getting fingerprints on the case!! I am sick of the whole idea of Acer and would NEVER buy another Acer product. She has had no reply to her original email sent over a week ago - she's starting Year 12 and desperately needs laptop - now No Laptop, + all information lost from it + Poorer by over $1200!! Shame on Acer. Disgusted!

I have had an ACER Aspire just over a year and the backlight has gone. Acer wants $199 to fix it, but after reading these comments I don't think it is worth it. Is there somewhere we should all complain to. They should be held accountable for their poor quality.

I had an acer laptop with USB port problems I fixed it.. then the cam was all buggy.. i Fixed it... then after 6 months and the warranty was gone the computer would freeze while playing a game. It would then restart.. this happened over and over until one day it wouldn't turn back on. Tried everything no one could help, looked online and saw that everyone else was having the same problem.. there goes 500$+

You know, now that I have installed Windows 7. My Acer Aspire 6930 is great. The cursor jumping around on the page while typing and the screensaver freezing up are more Widows problems. Because I know people with HP, and Dell's that have the same problem. The only real complaint that I have is the Acer customer non-support. But, overall, my Acer Aspire works well and I can not complain.

My Acer Aspire 6930 is 18 months old and is doing OK. I purchased Windows 7 (English) and replaced the French VISTA that Acer sent with the system and would not replace with an English version. I got my Acer on sale. But, for the problems and total lack of customer support that Acer is famous for, I should have bought a HP or a Dell and will do so when my Acer expires.

My acer 5534 laptop just crapped out on me. I am 8 months onto owning it. At first I thought I needed to charge it. But it just doesn't work. Was reading on other forums that it's a motherboard problem. Just great. Oh, and the product key doesn't register either. So sad Acer, so sad.

Acer customer service is hopeless. My laptop has been with them for 2 weeks under a supposed priority repair under warranty that they're now trying to tell me I don't have. This despite their system sending me confirmation of renewal. Truly hopeless and will not buy Acer again.

I have had my Aspire 8920 g for over a year now and it has caused me nothing but problems. When I first got it, the blue charging lights on the right side would not light up and windows crashed every 5-10 minutes and there was a dead red pixel in the middle of my screen. The first time I sent it back they did not fix anything so I sent it back again and they gave me a new hard (solved the problem) drive and fixed the lights, they did not fix my pixel (I needed at least 3 dead ones). Right about when the warranty expired the soldering came loose on my power connector and my laptop would not charge. I called them again and they said I would probably have to pay to fix it and for shipping and gave me an address to send it to that does not exist exist to ship it to. I fixed it myself knowing that if I sent it to acer they could take weeks and would probably charge me a hefty fee. My next problem is my monitor. For the past week, every time I move my screen adjust my monitor it looses picture. I have run out of patience with Acer and will never buy an them again and will recommend my friends to do the same.

i have an acer aspire, it came with vista and so many problems it was useless. i installed xp an it got a bit better. cd drive would dissapear at random intervals. usb problems. startup and shutdown problems. overheating problems. last night, it just switched off instantly for no reason, now it will not switch on at all. i press the on button, it lights up , the fan starts, then it switches off, then back on, then off... until i unplug it and pull the battery out. my advice to anyone thinking of buying an acer is pretty obvious. you would have less problems making your own computer from oil, sand and metal. be warned!

I suppose I have been fortunate. My ACER Aspire 6930 is about one year old and the only problem I have had was that the VISTA 64-bit was installed in French. Acer was not help at all, I am awaiting Windows 7 in October. I ordered Windows 7 in English and I hipe that this will cure the problem. If you think VISTA is complicated, try reading the menus in French!! Anyway, my Aspire 6930 has run like a charm so far. Maybe when it becomes one year & one day old ( and the warranty expires) I'll have a different story. Stay tuned for updates.

I bought an Acer Aspire for school a little over a year ago and I was working on it one night in my bedroom with it plugged into a surge protector...so it was fully charged and running on the adapter, not the battery. Well, I turned my head for a few minutes to watch something on television and the next time I looked back at the computer, it had completely shut down. I tried over and over again to get it back on, but all my efforts were useless. The adapter light to this day when plugged into the computer just flashes repeatedly. We tried using universal adapters to see if we could get it to come on, but they won't work either. The guy who looked at it last said that there was a broken connection between the battery and the adapter...exactly what though I'm not sure. Acer of course automatically assumes any problem you have with a computer that just turns off and doesn't reboot is a motherboard problem. And like everyone else on here, my warranty had conveniently expired the month before my computer died. I only had it ONE YEAR! Anyway, I'm going to order a new battery and see if that will help. If that doesn't do it, I think I'll just have to let it go and buy another computer. It's a shame though, cause this one could do EVERYTHING.

I read the article and almost wept. my ACER laptop barely 2 years old , crashed a few months back. It had keyboard problems from day one, the cursor slipping to places not intended. I took my laptop to the dealer, one of the most reputed Electronic companies in the middle east. They told me that both the mother board and the HD are faulty and that I would have to replace them. Having no other choice i did at an additional cost of US$350/-. They then gave me a warranty for one month. Well, guess what it crashed again yesterday. I am now left with a dead machine which has to date cost me over US$1300/-, and that too at a sale price. the Heartburn is rather unbearable. what recourse would you recommend?

I have an acer aspire 6930 myself and I have had unexpected errors myself. 1. Using internet explorer and my computer must have gotten a virus because much spam came and then it didn't boot. By the way this is not related to any adult orientated sites. Tried reinstalling vista but that was not even possible. 2. My LCD screen 3-5 months after I bought the laptop the screen has been jumping and I have sent it twice in for repair to the acer repair facility/ factory in texes still not fixed as of today, but will be.

Acer Aspire - won't hold charge and has become so hot the case has warped and the battery won't stay in, basically rendering it useless. Occurred right at 13 months after purchase so it is past the warranty deadline, but from what I hear from others they don't do much about honoring their warranty anyway.

You're right, Acers are not cheap at all. I bought an Acer Aspire 7720-6681 7 months ago and for three months now the laptop shuts down cold as though the electricity just stopped mostly when I use a media/audio player it gets so hot in the corner where the fan is. I don't think this is normal and it should not be doing this. But now I am stuck with this problem. For the same money I could have bought a Dell or an HP. I try to console myself into thinking that if I did buy something else, I might have worse problems. To add to this, the Dolby speakers are a joke. The sound of the speakers is so low. Even media streaming is not clear, it is really awful actually - not sure where that problem is coming from... And the screen is not clear at all - maybe because it is too glossy?

I just bought an Acer Aspire. The 1st one I exchanged because the letter Z was Y and vice versa. On the 2nd one, the point pad won't let me double tap to open windows and it won't download anything. It is now 32 days old. I have been online with Acersupport for 5 days now. They won't even give me an idea of what's going on. Every email asks for something new, 1st serial #, then model, address (again),then my COUNTY that I live in (not country, county, then where I bought it and on and on. Joke. No help at all on a 33 day old laptop. Perhaps they are waiting for the warranty to run out? DON'T BUY!!!

Hi, Acer laptops are very reliable, but yours may develop a problem with the charge circuit, after a few years of use. The laptop will charge itself to fully charged, then the charge light will go out and the laptop will continue working on the battery, not on the mains. This is not the charger being faulty. It's the power circuit inside the laptop. To keep using the PC, power down the laptop and remove battery. Re-insert the battery and boot up the laptop, all on the battery, if it's charged sufficiently. Start charging the laptop, but do not fully charge it. Stop charging and continue on the battery, then before the battery goes completely down, charge again. Don't charge fully again, but stop charging before it is fully charged. Continue in this way and you should be able to go on indefinitely. Good luck!

I bought a aced aspire 1642 about 2 years. Was told it was a great laptop. Not! We have all issues with this laptop. Main issue we can no longer use it at all I'm actually sending this info via my iPod . The biggest problem is the charger .the said we must send out to fix and could cost 300 or more for that price we decided to buy new. Aced computers are continuous problems. I hear dells are problems. Think I gonna do some research on gateway. Trust me your experience with gateway will be no different. It sucks!!!!

my acer just shuts down all the time. It seems to be overheating. I've only had it a little over a year, and it's almost worthless at this point.

I brought an acer laptop 2 months back and i agree with chad you can be writing and all of a sudden you are wwriting in the middle of a sentence youve done at the beginning of a para. Also somehow im not sure how but my CD/DVD drive has gone, i cant play or watch anything!!! It also has rejected wireless mouse and the cursor goes mad and you cant do a thing until it calms down, PLEASE reserach before purchase of an acer computer!!!

My Acer has lots of issues. Sometimes you will be typing and you look at what you typed, and half of it typing thru the middle of the sentence you typed. The cursor goes crazy all the time. (won't go where you want it, etc) Last night, I had it plugged in while using it, and said you have 5 minutes until no power. It also said I wasn't plugged in. So I had to restart, to get it to show up and charge.

oh gosh! i bought an acer laptop and i don't have an idea that it will cause plenty of problems. i'm so excited in having a laptop that's why i didn't have time in researching about the problems that it causes. i've experience having a difficulty in pressing some keys in the keyboard and now, the spacebar and letters m and w is not working. but the weird thing is that, even if i didn't press any key, letter w will show up many times like wwwwwwwwwwww... i don't know what's the problem with this. and then, i thought the battery will last for about an hour if it has been charge. but when i used the laptop without the adapter, for about a minute, it is now lowbat or low battery.
