Once upon a time, the main purpose of socks was merely to create warmth during a cold season, or perhaps to match a favorite dress or sweater. Then out of nowhere, these humble bits of knit suffered a mid-life crisis. Sock life suddenly became too dull. Socks now wanted fun and adventure. Socks wanted to feel sexy. And thus, knee socks came into being.

When choosing knee socks, check the material they are made of. If they are cotton, then they can breathe and absorb sweat and odor. Cotton pulls the moisture away from your feet and keeps them very comfortable. Your foot stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Cotton knee socks are also known to be the most durable.

Nylon knee socks do not last as long as there cotton counterparts. They have the tendency to make your foot slip in and out of your shoes. If you are using this kind of sock, chances are, there are already a lot of runs and holes in them. Women can still wear knee socks, just as long as you keep them out of sight when used under pants. Remember – knee socks with miniskirts are adorable on teen girls and children, but sad on grownup women.

Color is another factor to consider when choosing knee socks. Many people prefer white. With white, you do not have the problem of matching; they seem to go with just about any outfit.

Also make sure your socks fit. Read the package for the sizes that coordinate with your shoe size. Nothing is more embarrassing that having to take off those old smelly sneakers and finding your big toe hanging out for the whole world to see.
