Search Engine Optimisation – An Overview

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is referred to internet marketing which includes search engine optimization, placement of ads, etc. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a process in which a website is optimized with specific popular key phrases which people are likely to use when they make a search in the search engines. These keywords are related to the website. In the optimizing process, the website content is changed, the tags and titles of the web pages are changed so as to make the website listed in search engines when people search for something using those keywords. The website as well should be rich with some good content on topics pertaining to the website. A special program from the search engines (also called as ‘spiders’) would crawl the website pages to check if the subject discussed in the website are relevant and consistent with the keywords listed.

The other two main factors other than SEO which determine the rank and importance of search engine are Site Popularity and Link Popularity. Site popularity is nothing but popularizing the website through online and offline media resources. Link popularity is a method in which various websites on the same subject are inter linked based on mutual understanding between the parties. The more the number of websites that are linked, the more popular the website would be. But it should also be noted that the websites that are linked with are popular too. Linking with new websites that are new in the internet world would not be of any great use.

There are also a number of simple and efficient methods which would help you in gaining popularity for your website. Creating a strategy for your website would help you greatly. This would involve understanding of the market, the people who would search for information, their searching key terms, etc. Identifying the competition and building the website based on that would also help. Effective keywords for optimizing should also be listed as not every keyword would be good enough to popularize. There are many tools like Overture and WordTracker available in the market which can give you suggestions on good keywords.

You can also advertise your website online through classifieds, banners and flashing advertisements. Google AdWords is a good resource to advertise your website. This is a paid system and the procedure involves placement of advertisement on other websites with similar content. The idea is to drive in more traffic from the websites where these advertisements are placed. Google AdWords also have something called AdWords Keyword Suggestions; this would again provide you with the list of good keywords.

PPC or Pay Per Click is something in which the advertiser needs to pay only when someone clicks on the ad and visits the advertiser’s website. The keywords that the advertiser targets and feels to be effective are specified. The advertisements are displayed and are received from other systems like Google Adsense, Yahoo Publisher Network and so on. On the whole, whatever the method might be, the main intention is to popularize the website and make it reachable to everyone. Clear planning and appropriate use of content would help in achieving this goal.
