The headboard is a very useful piece of furniture that attaches easily to the head of the bed. Headboards retain the pillows and very often provide a comfortable and secure backing to the bed upon which to lean and relax. Furthermore, they also provide a decorative theme and focus for the bed and the room as a whole. Headboards may also be used to provide a wide variety of other functions. These include storage provision, the attachment of various sexual conveniences, or incorporation into the medical care functions required for the bed of a patient.
Brief history
A headboard is a classic piece of furniture, whose enduring popularity is ensured due to its useful function, durability and aesthetic value. Headboards have been made from wood for hundreds of years, and wooden headboards remain very popular. Wood remains the most common material for making all furniture due to its natural properties which make it ideal for various kinds of treatment and techniques. Developments in craftsmanship and mechanical techniques during the past 200 years or so have made headboard production both more commercially viable and quicker. The range of contemporary wooden headboards is enormous, and aesthetic design may be altered by the type and colour or shade of the wood, as well as the shape of the headboard itself.
As with most enduring classics, headboards are now available in an almost dazzling array of designs and materials. Beautiful, yet highly functional headboards are now available in wood, metal, leather, suede and upholstered fabric. Browse through an on-line headboard outlet, and you will be amazed by the wide range available. Headboards will always be in demand, due to their aesthetic value combined with their practical purposes. One can find a headboard to suit the widest possible range of décor styles, from traditional to the cutting edge modern. A headboard makes a statement, and choosing the right headboard is the easiest way to decide on the mood or theme of the individual bedroom. Once the headboard is chosen, it provides a focal point, from which the curtains, wall colours and textures, wardrobes, dressing tables and chests of drawers can be chosen. Headboards are used in any type of bedroom, from homes, to hospitals, to hotels and palaces!
Design
Colour and texture are vital components of interior design. Headboards are available in the widest imaginable range of fabric colours, textures and styles. Leather is also an obvious choice of material for headboards due to its natural properties of durability, its very attractive appearance and its wonderful aroma. Aside from wood and leather, headboards have also traditionally been made from metal for hundreds of years. The image of a traditional brass bed with a patchwork quilt or eiderdown is familiar and intrinsically comforting and reassuring to us all. Metal headboards available today range from finely crafted, often intricate traditional designs, to modern, geometric styles with clean lines. Metal headboards are made in a variety of materials, and finishes include brass, iron, cast iron, chrome, alloy, brushed steel and nickel.
Sizes and fitment
Headboards are designed to be easily fitted onto any bed, and once secured, they are very strong and durable. All headboards come with headboard struts/legs as standard unless they are wall hung or wall mounted, in which case appropriate fixings will be supplied. In some instances, headboards may be floor standing to give the appearance of a complete wooden or metal bedstead. Headboards are available to fit any bed, and are produced to fit standard bed sizes, from small single, to super king size.
As the range of headboard styles and materials is so wide, the perfect headboard can almost certainly be found for any bedroom. However, the option to create a unique and individual headboard is also available, and bespoke headboards may be ordered and produced to exact personal requirements and specifications.
Anybody interested in, or working in interior design will certainly know about the range of headboard styles, designs and materials available, and will be able to use these attractive and functional pieces of furniture very effectively. As with all fashions, interior and bedroom designs change with time to reflect contemporary trends. Headboard design keeps pace with ever changing design genres, reflecting the latest bedroom design trends or zeitgeist, yet simultaneously offering a wide range of traditional and timeless designs. The literally enormous range of headboards available means that anybody wishing to improve the appearance of their bedroom can choose exactly the right headboard to suit his or her needs and the bedroom as a whole.
Relaxing sleep
Without a good night’s sleep, it is not possible to function well. We all know the problems associated with a lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Bedrooms are the room in which we recharge our batteries, refresh ourselves for living, relax, make love, recuperate when ill and have time to ourselves. Therefore, the bedroom is arguably the most important room in the home. The bedroom needs to be comfortable and aesthetically suited to the person or people using it. Therefore, headboards are here to stay!
