While most people would think that building an Electric Car would be a difficult project to undertake it really is not. It took us about 2 weeks to convert a 1995 Toyota Corolla into an Electric Car for only a few hundred dollars and you can do the same with your car.
To get started with your project your going to need
A detailed set of plans
A car to convert - any vehicle with a standard transmission and runs on gas or diesel will do
A garage or shop to work in, but this is not a necessity
A collection of tools - wrenches, drills...
The first part that you will need to build your electric car is a large DC Motor in the range of 9 inches or greater (AC Motors can be used but they are more expensive).
Second your going to need a source of batteries, not ordinary car batteries but deep cycle batteries.
For the DC motor you can use salvaged motors, and we recommend that you use the sources of free DC motors and free industrial batteries listed in the plans, since these items are going to be the most expensive part of the project.
Now for the good stuff, your going to have to rent a hoist or find a friendly mechanic to left out the cars engine, leaving the clutch, flywheel assembly in place. This will leave you with sufficient room for the dc motor, batteries and mounting assembly.
An important note here is to make sure you only use a car that uses a standard transmission, because an automatic transmission Will Not Work!
Once you have converted your car to run from the DC motor it will drive like a gas powered automatic transmission engine. With this conversion from gas to electricity there is no idling, so there is no clutching as there is with a gas engine.
With the plans in this electric car project your car will be able to travel 200 miles at 50 mph on a single charge and this is a good thing since analyst project that gas price could hit the $7/gallon mark very soon.
Building your own electric car is a fun and educational project that can save you money by bypassing the gas pump. With these plans you can start building your own electric car and learn all there is to know about electric car conversions.
Isn't it time you got started on you electric car conversion project!
