Building a windmill is something that most people think they can't do. The truth is that if you can follow simple step by step instructions, you can start creating your own electricity in less than 15 days.
Do you want to cut down your electric bill by 50 or 70%?
Do you want to live off grid and impress your family and friends?
The small to medium sized wind turbines in the 750 - 100 Watt range are much easier to build than the larger ones over 1000 Watts. Stick with the small to medium sized designs in the beginning. You can always build more than one if you need to generate more free electricity.
Many people in the US started using renewable energy and are able to save a lot of money on their power bill. Many of them are doing this because they enjoy this style of life, while others are forced to do it because of the current economic situation.
Do you know that with the right tools and components, you can build your own wind turbine in a record time?
The best way to build a windmill is to have a plan.
Before you start, you will need to inform yourself to be sure that you are allowed to build a windmill in the area you chose to. This is an important step because you do not want to buy all the windmill parts to find that there was some restrictions in your area, and be forced to remove it after that. In other words, is it legal to start building a windmill in your area or not?
Secondly, you need to know that there are many different windmill designs that you can choose. I advise that you start drawing your windmill (on a simple physical paper) before you start with your project. Just do like an architect would do if he wanted to build a house.
You will get an idea about the material you will need to purchase, and it will be much easier to spot the eventual problems your windmill can face.
Then, you need to determinate wind flow in your area. 5 to 15 mph on average is a good sign that you can install a windmill without any problems. If the average wind flow speed in your area is too weak, you may end up with no wind power. In this case, you need to reconsider your project and think about sun power or even hydro power if applicable.
In your plans for building a windmill, you will also need to add your budget. How much money can you spend on this project? You also want to make sure that you don't spend more that what you are going to save on your power bill. This sounds obvious, but many people will forget because the become so enthusiastic about their project that they forget why they start in the first place.
In fact, you have two ways to build your money saving windmill. The first is to do it yourself by going to your local salvage yard. Doing this will enable you to build your windmill for less than $200 if you have a good guide.
If you are lazy and have some money to spend, you can build a pre-built starter kit. However, instead of paying $200, you will end up paying $1000 or even more than that.
The next step is to know what material you are going to use.
A windmill is composed of the tower, the blades, the motor, the batteries and the electronic controller.
You can build the blades with steal, wood or aluminum. Then, you need to know how many blades you will have?
Here is in a nutshell what you need to have in your windmill plans.
