To know what tools you will need to remove toilet stains you must know what kind of stain you have. A raise crusty deposit usually indicates that the stain is calcium or lime based. Rust stains are generally cause by a high iron content in you water. Once you have determined the cause of your stain it will be much easier to know what tools are needed to remove it.
Before you begin cleaning prepare both your self and the bowl. Proper safety when cleaning is a necessity. Wear a pair of rubber gloves to protect your skin. A face mask may also be helpful in avoiding the harm that can be caused by these fumes. Once you are certain you have made yourself safe you can prep the toilet.
If you use a toilet cake, remove it and flush toilet repeatedly. This will remove bleach from the toilet. Bleach can be quite toxic when mixed with other chemicals so this step is very important to your safety. Now empty the water from the toilet. You can do this by rapidly plunging the toilet until the water empties. This will allow cleaning products to adhere to the stain and concentrate their effectiveness.
For lime or calcium stains use a cleanser that will break down heavy build up. Allow the cleanser to soak briefly, 10 minutes or so, and then scrub with a pumice stone. The stress on your hands will be decreased significantly if you use a stone with a handle.
Rust stains require less vigorous scrubbing, but should not be expected to be completely removed by one cleaning. If you are not able to remove the stains the first time, flush the toilet and repeat the steps, beginning at water removal. Special cleansers can be purchased for rust stains. You may even find an all purpose cleanser that will work for all types of stains. Be sure that the cleanser you choose is also anti-bacterial and you will be able to clean with it regularly to both sanitize and prevent future staining.
